Student from Adelaide (AUS) looking to break into IB

Hey monkeys,

currently in my first year (out of 4) at University of Adelaide doing a double degree finance and banking and economics. Been really inspired by some people working in IB and wanting to break into that. location wise Adelaide is not a good spot at all for any internships or to make connections but I'm pushing to make as many as possible.

Looking for advice on where to aim my studies top get into IB and where I should go from here. I'm applying for internships and inquiring in the WSO academy. After this degree I am more than certain I am going to move to a larger financial city to work. Any advice to increase my chances to getting into IB?

Anyone else from Adelaide PM me

Breaking into IB from Adelaide is definitely a challenge, but not impossible with the right strategy. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s a roadmap to increase your chances:

  1. Networking Aggressively:

    • Start building connections early. Use LinkedIn to reach out to alumni from the University of Adelaide who are working in finance or IB.
    • Attend finance-related events, even if they’re in other cities like Sydney or Melbourne.
    • Join student finance societies or clubs and participate in case competitions to showcase your interest and skills.
  2. Internships:

    • While Adelaide may not have many IB opportunities, look for internships in related fields like corporate banking, Big 4 advisory (M&A, valuations), or boutique consulting firms. These can serve as stepping stones.
    • Apply widely for summer internships in Sydney, Melbourne, or even overseas. Many firms are open to hiring strong candidates from non-target schools if you demonstrate passion and capability.
  3. Skill Development:

    • Learn financial modeling and valuation techniques. Platforms like WSO Academy offer courses tailored for IB prep.
    • Gain proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint, and tools like Bloomberg.
    • Stay updated on market trends and deals to discuss intelligently during interviews.
  4. Academic Excellence:

    • Maintain a strong GPA, as it’s a key filter for IB roles.
    • Consider taking additional courses or certifications (e.g., CFA Level 1) to strengthen your profile.
  5. Relocation Plan:

    • As you mentioned, moving to a larger financial hub like Sydney or Melbourne post-graduation is essential. These cities have a more robust IB presence and networking opportunities.
    • If possible, consider transferring to a university in one of these cities to increase your exposure to recruiters and events.
  6. Master’s Degree Option:

    • If you find it challenging to break into IB directly after undergrad, consider pursuing a master’s degree at a top institution (e.g., UNSW, University of Melbourne, or even overseas at LSE, Imperial, or similar).
  7. Leverage WSO Resources:

    • Engage with the WSO community for advice, mentorship, and networking.
    • Utilize the WSO Networking Guide and other resources to refine your approach.

Remember, breaking into IB is a marathon, not a sprint. Stay persistent, keep building your profile, and don’t hesitate to reach out for help or advice along the way. Good luck!
