Suicidal after not converting

Did not convert at BB and for some reason cannot pick myself up again

in interviews I get brain fog , I’m still in denial with the outcome because I absolutely loved the experience and people I worked with

come from a very poor family so the impact of not getting such a high finance job is much greater

how do ppl cope and manage in these situations. I hate waking up every morning

fully appreciate tough spot. what I would say is trust in your ability, determination and drive. if you're committed enough you will get to where you want to get to. it may not be in the specific timeframe you had in mind but setbacks happen and this is one of those. use this as a chance to demonstrate the resilience you'll need to display in your desired roles anyway and keep going.

probably the wrong time for this message too, but i always try to appreciate the journey itself. there's an adage i like that says 'there's beauty in the struggle' - you may not feel that now, but one day you'll hopefully come to appreciate this, and you'll likely actually miss that chase when you eventually get what you want. keep at it, you got this :)

Please don't get me wrong but before getting into high finance (I'm sure you will), please work on your mentality. IB can be challenging, people aren't always nice so you need to be kinda tough to succeed. Getting suicidal from not converting is extreme imho so I genuinely suggest some therapy to brace yourself. At the same time, just please keep networking. Good luck

It's normal to be frustrated not getting a return offer, or to be scared not to get one. Everyone in the forum knows how much work it takes to get the first big internship and the pressure some may put on him- or herself. Still, do not forget that you are in a great position. You have a good name on your CV, there will be other banks that you will have a shot at.

I had simillar thoughts as you did, what helped me was realizing that the first job is a way smaller step in the future as one might think today. In 20 years no one will care if you spent a year in a MM bank before lateraling to a BB, in 20 years no one in your age group will care where you started your career but what you have made out of it and what kind of person you will be then.

I know it's rough right now, but keep your head up. You are in a good position, you've lost nothing of your career. Sometimes having a chip on your shoulder can also be quite powerful, so try to take some motivation out of it and worry less, you won't die poor.

I was in the same situation as you. Literally couldn’t get out of bed for a week when I got home, wanted to commit suicide etc.

You have to get over yourself and realize that an IB analyst role is not your end goal, it’s being affluent. While working at GS may be a decent path there, there’s more rich people who didn’t work in investment banking that there are who did. Pick yourself up. One day you’re going to tell your kids this story and it’ll all turn out well!

Hey, we come from similar backgrounds, and I’ve been in your shoes. Take time to reflect on your shortcomings from this past summer. Thought about them? Good. Never make those mistakes again, and don’t lose hope. I managed to find a great and arguably better position for full-time work.
First, nothing is worth taking your life over. All defeat is purely mental. I truly believe that, and you should too. “No” doesn’t mean “no” forever; it just means “no” right now (unless this is about consent lol). If you want to go back to this BB, it will be possible down the line. You are resilient if you’ve come this far in life, given where you and I started. Realistically, I shouldn’t be where I am, and I love the chip I wake up with on my shoulder every day, embrace that. You have worked harder than your peers to get just as far, and when you’re at your best, they can’t compete, so be your best. If you want to change your family’s station in life (or your own) you must be tougher than this life, which will continue to throw a lot of rejections your way. Believe that.
Once you get your head right and remember who you are, you need a plan. Think: What roles are you interested in for full-time work? Who in your network from school, the BB, or parents of friends can help you get new opportunities?
Map it out.
Simply springing into action will make you feel better. Do not dwell on the past (that will only cause stress). Live in the present and do the best you can now to find a new role. If you don’t find something that’s perfect for you, know that’s okay. Focus on perfecting your knowledge so when the opportunity arises for a role you’re truly interested in, you can seize it. Good luck!

I've been in your shoes when I was a SA. Guess what, I ended up in a better job when I recruited full time.

After I started full time, throughout the 3.5 years of banking I did, I have also mentored a few interns who didn't end up getting return offers to our M&A group.

Guess what, they honestly all ended up in better jobs (like fr, better banks, higher tiered cities).

I always tell kids, and even myself sometimes: Whatever happens happens. Everything happens for a reason. If it's not meant to be, it's not meant to be. You will be exactly where you are supposed to be.

Thank you all for your advice/ thoughts. This internship was at a top BB (GS/JPM/MS) and waited 2 yrs to get this opportunity. In terms of my background I am extremely poor as in come from below poverty level background and I am a female so maybe being a bit dramatic lol.

I will keep moving on, appreciate the advice.
