Swapping product desks in S&T

I've been networking like crazy for the past two years and I've met and speak to HR reps at the major banks in my country on a first name basis (they seem to have more power in the recruiting process here than what it seems like they do in the US and UK). I've also met a lot of younger and a few older bankers. The one thing that they all agree on is that they think I would be good for a sales role, but I'm pretty set on a structuring role (as far as I know, this has a significant sales role involved in it). Would it be possible for me to enter the bank in a sales role then try and wriggle my way onto the structuring desk or should I fight to get into structuring from the very beginning?

It's always better to start on the desk you actually want to be on -- once you join a switch to structuring is possible, but only if a role is available AND your existing desk can afford to give you up -- you will be at the mercy of chance.

Why are you set on a structuring role?
