thoughts on posting job acceptance on linkedin

Seeing a lot of SA 2024 acceptances on LinkedIn, and considering posting one myself. Curious what everyone thinks about the typical, "I'm extremely excited to announce...thank you to X person" posts. I understand you want to shoutout people who made your recruiting process easier, but it just comes off braggy to me. What does everyone else think?

LinkedIn is filled with so many retarded influencers and dumb motivational posts, so when I see a job update from a connection I actually don't mind it. That is, as long as the job is actually worth celebrating (not some shitty sales job) and the post is short and to the point. I like seeing where my friends are headed, but when it's a multi-paragraph post where someone is waxing eloquent about how this role is the culmination of all their life's trials and tribulations (direct quote from an MBA classmate of mine) and tags multiple people.... it turns into a gigantic eyeroll.

I did it like in March so that I could connect with other incoming interns in my division, not to brag, per se. But something I learned from interning last year is to be a bit unashamed in singing your praises bcos no one else will 🤷‍♂️

You’re an intern bro. You don’t have any praises to sing lmao

I think these types of posts are peak zoomer cringe. Personally, it has never crossed my mind to post something like this because at the end of the day no one really gives a shit. If you truly want to thank someone for helping you, just send them an email or give them a call. These posts reek of self-congratulatory narcissism and remind me of the celebrity award shows where every hollywood jerkoff gathers around to sniff their own farts. I love when these posts thank everyone the person has ever interacted with since middle school "I want to thank my middle school baseball coach who taught me the true meaning of grit (when he wasn't too busy staring at the 8th grade girls asses) and also want to thank tammy from HR who hates her job and doesn't even know who i am but she filled out my social security number on my health insurance forms. Couldn't have done it without you all!" god damn i have become a grumpy asshole... make a post if you want, idk.

I'd agree with the others above OP and say it's a little cringe, however I know this is a very popular thing to do for Gen-Z/young kids graduating now (I'm a millennial in my early 30s). So yeah whilst it's not something I ever did, if done tastefully then I certainly wouldn't hold it against you.

What do I mean by tasteful? Basically what the guy above says, i.e. don't write some enormous paragraph where you thank the whole universe. Also my personal pet peeve is where an incoming analyst/fresh graduate writes "I am delighted to announce I have chosen to accept an offer at CS/GS/MS" as if they are a first-round NFL pick signing a multi-million dollar contract lol. It just screams either narcissism or naivety - as whilst it's a great personal accomplishment out of college, the rest of the world really does not give a sh*t about whether one analyst "accepts a contract." Sorry to say but fresh analysts are not like Michael Jordan being signed fresh out of college, if anything they're the opposite (raw untested fodder for the IB machine to grind up, and very much replaceable at least initially!)

So yeah obviously up to you OP, but if you do it then just make it short and sweet - i.e. "I'm delighted to be starting soon at MS" or something along those lines. You still score points with your peers/fellow college kids but don't look like a d-bag to the rest of the world.

You should re-evaluate where you derive your sense of importance if you feel like you need praise from other interns and LinkedIn users. As nice as it feels to “sing your own praises”, you shouldn’t be finding fulfillment in showing off how good your internship is to other students.

Sometimes HR will nudge you in an email to make a post and will attach some graphic. I guess it shows to your future co-workers and the firm that you're excited for the position. I mean the comments of these posts are always MDs going "I was in your shoes 30 years ago! Congratulations!" or some shit like that. Some MDs use LinkedIn like Facebook and post every day so they expect it. Others haven't updated their shit in years and have a blank pfp, just depends.

Other then that it's to get admiration from peers and flex on people from school

Wow, that's interesting!

In any case, it may depend on demography too. For some people in Nigeria for instance, getting even a middle Office internship in a reputable firm in UK (BB for instance) gives then earning power that's extremely rare among the West African populace. Within that demographic, making LinkedIn posts isn't that cringe-worthy—many of them still can't believe their good luck

I sometimes wonder if I am mildly autistic, anti-social or even a little sociopathic (since I don’t seem to have much empathy).

Then I read posts like this and am reminded how truly social awkward autists think about. And I realize I just can’t suffer fools and don’t care about most people because most people are strangers.

Please do make a post about your internship acceptance so your 25 LinkedIn connections are aware.

Personally think the whole “Excited to announce my internship at Deez Nuts as a ligma analyst, I’d like to thank xyz” is a little cringe. Granted, I’m very introverted and I never post anything on any social media platforms so maybe that’s just why.

Like a comment above said, I’m always happy seeing one of my friends land a sick job somewhere but I’d rather just tell them in person and send a personalized thank you to whoever helped me out in the recruiting process
