Thoughts on sending a 'Thank you' note after turning down an offer ?
I recently found myself in the (fortunate but tough) position of having to choose between multiple internship offers. After a lot of thinking, I accepted one and had to decline the others. The rejection was handled via HR since the process was managed separately.
That said, I had really good conversations with a few of the interviewers at one of the firms I turned down and would definitely like to keep the door open for future opportunities there.
Would it be weird to send a quick thank you note now, even though I’ve already declined the offer through HR? Or is it better to just stay silent and maybe reconnect later down the line?
Would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks in advance!
Sending a thank-you note after turning down an offer is not only appropriate but can also be a smart move to maintain a positive relationship with the firm for future opportunities. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s how you can approach this:
Acknowledge the Decline: Start by briefly referencing that you’ve already communicated your decision through HR. This shows you’re aware of the formalities and are not bypassing the process.
Express Gratitude: Thank the interviewers for their time, insights, and the opportunity to engage with them during the process. Highlight specific aspects of your conversations that you found valuable or memorable.
Keep the Door Open: Politely express your interest in staying connected and your hope to potentially collaborate in the future. This leaves a positive impression and signals your professionalism.
Be Respectful and Concise: Avoid over-explaining your decision or making it seem like you’re second-guessing your choice. Keep the tone respectful and forward-looking.
