Tips for networking
Hi everyone,
After days of strenuous searching around the internet for solid networking advice, without any meaningful findings, I seek practical and tested advice to grow my network.
Thank you so much to anyone willing to share a fraction of their knowledge.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some practical and tested networking tips to help you grow your network:
Use E-mail Templates: While personalized emails are nice, using templates can save time and ensure consistency in your outreach.
Show Genuine Interest: Relate to someone's story or experiences. Genuine conversations often lead to stronger connections.
Find Mentors, Not Just Contacts: A long list of contacts can get you interviews, but mentors can help you prepare and succeed in those interviews.
Multiple Contacts at Each Firm: Talking to multiple people at a firm increases your chances of getting a referral and being taken seriously.
Always Ask for More Contacts: A simple question like “Is there anyone else I should talk to?” can greatly expand your network.
Maximize Initial Outreach: Make your connections mutual and valuable. Play to your strengths, whether in-person or online.
Organize Your Contacts: Use an Excel document to sort contacts by characteristics like interests, alumni status, or career accomplishments. This helps in organizing your thoughts and conversations.
Dress Professionally at Events: Ensure your clothing fits well and is appropriate for networking events. Stick to neutral colors like black, grey, or navy blue.
Carry Hard Copies of Your Resume: Have at least twenty hard copies of your one-page resume ready at networking events.
Leverage Different Situations: Use various templates and strategies to communicate effectively and earn a respectable return on networking efforts.
These tips should help you build a strong and effective network. Good luck!

It would help if you knew your goals and sort of pick events based on that. Also, it depends on your personality if you feel more comfortable and do better in a smaller group or don't mind the crowd (basically if you're an introvert or an extrovert). The more you're able to be yourself, the better. And this is also one of the simplest but probably best tips I can give you. Also, you could create a digital business card to have handy on top of traditional ones (I've made mine here). I am not the most extroverted person, so it helps me, for example, that my card has a two-way sharing contact option. I don't need to be pushy, because it really doesn't come naturally to me, and this way many people actually do share their contact on the spot. I guess it's partly because they don't get the impression I'll be spamming their inbox and partly because it's very convenient to do it this way. Generally, I sometimes go to large-scale conferences and career fairs, but more often I pick smaller events. If there's a happy hour meetup, I'll be there, this casual way of connecting in a low-pressure environment works well for me. You could try to google the events scheduled for the next six months or so and try to plan out which you want to attend. I mean, we all have a budget and other plans to work around, so I try to figure this out as early as possible.
Thanks for the helpful insights, I will try them surely in the future. I'll keep you posted
