To become a fund-manager: S&T or PE

Hi Monkeys,

So my long-term goal is to be a pm and pick the investments or at least have a role. My offers for the summer are either at a tier 1 BB in S&T (rotational) or a top PE firm (specific industry focus)

Both are great offers and I want to be a PM in the future, so what should I do? These are SA offers. I figure S&T will give me a great understanding of what it means to learn a market in/out, but PE will give me understanding of actual investment process and experience with buyside industry.

What do you all think?

i mean if you really want to get into the hf/pm role, you would likely get a more valuable experience out of PE. as im sure you know, S&T is extremely specialized, in that you are a market maker, not necessarily making investment decisions--the time horizon is completely different. additionally, the experience youd get at a PE firm would likely be a much more hands on experience. not to mention if you want to end up on the buyside, youd be better off starting there...

[quote=Gekko21]^^Wow, so many things wrong with the above. I suppose part of it is with the definition of "investment", but still......

How so? Everyone says "trading is the exit opp for s&t". Which I agree with. Many people agree that ib/PE Place better into the hf world that s&t. So what do you mean?
