Unusual situation: college junior can’t accept return offer to break into finance - is a deferred MBA my best shot?
I’m an international student at a semi-target, will be heading into a sell-side internship at a leading bank this summer. Ideally, post-college and long-term I’d want to go into investment research, eventually transitioning to a pure research role at a buy-side shop (e.g. P72 MI).
HOWEVER, even if I crush this summer and get a return offer, I’m unable to take it and stay in the USA after graduation. My situation is complicated:
I grew up in a developing Asian country and my parents couldn’t afford to send me to college. Through sheer hard work I snagged a very coveted full-ride scholarship from my government to study at any university in the world. The one caveat is that I have to return home to work for them in a completely unrelated role for 4-6 years after graduation; if I default on this, my parents will lose their house.
I love the U.S. - it has afforded me so many opportunities and transformed me as a person. I desperately want to stay here, and I find research and idea generation tremendously interesting. Goes without saying but salaries here also far eclipse those I’d be making back home.
I’m afraid that by heading home post grad, I’ll severely compromise my chances of being able to come back to the U.S., let alone break back into finance here. As we all know, the barrier to entry keeps rising the further out from college you are.
So, I’m looking at deferred MBA programs right now - I’m thinking if I could get into a solid M7 one, after paying my dues back home for a few years, I’d have saved enough money to mostly fund the MBA, come back to the U.S., and use the opportunity to rerecruit for post-MBA roles to have a second crack. Really wouldn’t be fussed about roles, from IB to IM etc. beggars can’t be choosers.
Does this strategy sound viable? Bear in mind I’d have no full time high finance work experience compared to many other candidates coming from 2+2 IB and PE backgrounds. Is it possible to recruit with a decent chance of success for IB / investing / research roles from a top business school if you put the work in, even if you don’t have adequate pre-MBA work experience?
Any guidance would be much appreciated
I have a buddy at DeferMBA - they specialize in stuff like this. Would recommend reaching out.
