US Internship for Canadian Student with No US Visa?
I'm a business student born in Canada studying at a Canadian University (think UToronto, UBC, McGill). I'm looking for an Investment Banking internship in the US (NYC) or London, but I do not have a visa in either country. Are BB banks, PE firms, and Consulting firms like GS, JPM, Deutsche, CS, MS, BOA, Blackstone, McKinsey, BCG, and Bain accepting internship applications from Canadian students without a US or UK visa? A friend at my school informed me that none of these firms are accepting Canadian students (other than maybe GS) after Trump's administration passed a bill making it more difficult to receive a student visa, no idea if this is still true for Summer 2023 internships. Lastly, if these firms in London/NYC are accepting students like me, any advice on getting an interview? I submitted 100+ applications to these firms last year for a Summer 2022 internship and didn't get a single interview (I have a strong GPA and experience), and so far this year, I haven't received word back for the 60+ applications I submitted back in April for Summer 2023 internships - not a single interview request, but a lot of rejections already - AS EXPECTED, but was hoping for 1 interview at least. Really hoping to avoid a repeat year.
Your friend is wrong. I know for a fact that out of the firms you listed, CS, GS, MS, BofA and BX have all accepted Canadians in the last recruiting cycle. However, I believe summer 2023 applications are already closed for all of those firms as they all recruited in the spring. Also, you need to network. There are alumni from your school at many of these firms so hit up LinkedIn before sending in applications blindly
Is it possible that all these Canadian students were studying in the US and have visas already? Also, I feel quite strange messaging alumni at these firms. It feels very "one-sided" where we both know that I just want a reference from them. Any advice on going about this, cheers/
Oh, are you sure about applications being closed for London firms? I heard they don't begin opening applications until September - Deutsche, for example.
I can only speak for 2023 US SA recruiting. I don't know anything about recruiting for london.
These students were studying in Canada. I go to Queens/Ivey and personally know some of the people I mentioned earlier.
I agree that networking feels somewhat transactional but at the same time, they know why you're calling. They're not answering some random kid's email just for fun either and there's little value you can provide them. Don't worry too much about it. Somebody helped them get a position and in turn they'll help you.
Gotcha, appreciate it!
Looks like I'm too late for Summer 2023, guess I'll be trying again for 2024 :'(
Any tips for what you did to get a 2023 spot? Always curious what a fellow Canadian student does to compete with our Southern counterparts.
