Wait time after meetings?

I had a meeting with a prospect recently and I asked for a referral to someone else they might know. They told me to give them some time so they can look through their contacts and set something up. I was wondering when would be good to follow up if I don't hear back, and also should I write a thank you email for the meeting? It was a really good meeting and I got a lot out of it, obviously i thanked them for their time before and after the meeting and even via email when they agreed to meet, sending it via email again seems really forced and I don't want to push it by bothering them too much via email. I was thinking of just doing it as a follow up? Any ideas?

The week following your meeting, for example, if you met with the person on a Tuesday you can contact them the following Thursday. You want to give them a little over a week, so that they don't feel like you are breathing down their neck.

Did you send a thank you note the day after your meeting? That would have been a good idea since you could have mentioned in the email when you were trying again. In your next email certainly mention when you will email him again and ask if he/she prefers a different date.

Now that I think of it, I recently heard a Managing Director from a bank saying that he hated people that did not call. He saw this as being lazy and not proactive enough. I actually prefer people emailing me, but just to cover all the bases you might want to email and let him know that you will follow up with a call later that day.

I didn't send them a thank you note on the day of. I thought I would just do it all at once as a follow up if I don't hear back from them? It was Friday when I met.
