What am I doing wrong? - Sophmore student at a target
Hello All,
I am a sophomore student at a target school, with a decent GPA (above 3.6) looking to break into finance or consulting. I am not interested in banking but rather something with the markets, i.e. equity research, Equity Sales, etc. or perhaps corp. strategy/corp. finance, etc. Basically, I am undecided. As such, I have been applying to a wide array of firms/internship opportunities both through on-campus recruiting, a couple of personal contacts, online, etc. Despite my efforts thus far, I have not had a single response/interview request. It is beginning to get disheartening watching internship deadlines come and go, and people begin to get interviews, yet I have nothing. I've gotten my resume reviewed numerous times, and everyone I have spoken to, including older students at my school, have all remarked at how my resume is pretty impressive for a sophomore. (I have a couple of (albeit rather weak) internships already, along with relevant extracurriculars. I am not being picky, and would be plenty happy with a PWM internship or the like. So, what am I doing wrong?
By the way, I am networking and have been reaching out to alums for informational interviews which have been going well, but they all seem to say "We basically look for juniors, go do anything relevant next summer, and you'll be well prepared when the time comes"...
You aren't doing anything wrong, there just aren't many spots for interns after their sophomore year. It just isn't common. Almost everything is via personal contacts or very small firms that don't have formal recruiting processes. Also it's junior recruiting time right now, if anything is to be had it will come later in the year. But just enjoy your time. You're at a target, you'll be fine.
Thanks for the reassurance. You probably are right, I just don't want to be stuck with nothing come April/May, and beyond. If anyone else could chime in with advice pertaining to when they were sophomores, or offer any other perspectives, that'd be great.
I got my internship later into sophomore year, March or so. A few of my friends also had very last minute deals from smaller MM/boutique firms. While you can be picky as a sophomore, aiming exclusively for the BBs is not too wise. Best to keep your options open.
