What counts as military service on background checks

In the wake of the recent news that the UK government might be considering a compulsory 1–2-year National (quasi-military) Service, I am interested in asking about my own home country where that has been on ground for decades. In my country's case, it is a 1 year compulsory service for all graduates from a bachelor's degree programme. Would it be accurate to tick the ex–MILITARY service aspects of (London) IB application form DIVERSITY questions based on that (I coincidentally did my 1-year service in a military barrack)? It is occasionally said in my home country (not UK) that graduates on this National Service could potentially be drafted to assist the main military in (unexpected) times of war

Feel like this is pretty justifiable if you were in a military barrack, then you were technically part of the military, making you now ex-military which you can put on applications.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, military service on background checks typically refers to formal, full-time service in the armed forces, such as the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, or Merchant Marines. This includes:

  • Service Academy or Scholarship Route: Completing a degree from US Federal Service Academies (Army, Navy, Airforce, Coast Guard, Merchant Marines) or through ROTC programs.
  • Officer Candidate School Route: Joining any branch as an officer after obtaining a degree, often with a commitment of several years of service.

In your case, a 1-year compulsory national service for graduates, even if conducted in a military barrack, might not be considered equivalent to full-time military service as understood in the context of US military service. It is generally seen as a civilian program with a potential for military support rather than formal military enlistment.

For diversity questions on an IB application form, it would be more accurate to clarify the nature of your service rather than ticking the ex-military service box, as this could lead to misunderstandings about the extent and nature of your military experience.
