What kind of job should I be looking for out of college?

Hey guys let me just say that I am a big fan of this forum and have been looking at it for months now and finally decided to make a post. All of your posts really help and I've learned a lot from it. Anyhow, I am stressing about my career already lol and I literally just graduated in May. I have a major in finance with a triple minor in accounting, economics, and quantitative analysis from a non target school here in the northeast. I've done one finance internship at the American Red Cross and that got me a job as a collections specialist (entry level accounting I guess) position at a company here in NY. I never wanted to go into accounting as I find it honestly boring, and I am really trying to pursue something in finance, but cannot seem to find any luck. I took this position for now because of job security and maybe room to grow within the company. Excuse me if this question has been asked already but am I kinda going in the right path? I mean a job in A/R can't be too bad out of college, but then again it's no where near the finance position I would wanna be in. I was hoping to maybe get a very basic entry level position in finance, like an analyst or something like that but no luck. Should I be worried? Any input would be appreciated.

You could try to move in to restructuring. They value the accounting side of things a lot. You won't be doing straight accounting but it'll be part of your job. from there you could switch to something else.

I've read about that briefly and that seems like a good potential career path. i'll definitely have to look more into it.

"A very basic entry level position in finance..." it sounds like you don't even know the first thing about the various areas of finance. Do some preliminary research and understand the industry and the positions you are interested in pursuing. Then come back and ask for advice.

An A/R position, in a company not an accounting firm, is more so considered bookkeeping or collections in the case of A/R. If you decide to stay with your company, you must gain a role where you do actual accounting not just record transactions. That being said it will be very difficult to move from an accounting position to a analyst position. This is because you will need to show you know how to analyze financial statements etc.

Also, as @"Discounted Cash Bro" has said, you need to do some research about areas of finance. A position as an analyst is not a "very basic entry level position". Read these forms and try to find posts about "a day in the life" of an analyst, corp fin, PWM, big4 accountant, etc...

You're exactly right, as I am in collections right now and it's really not doing anything for my experience nor skills to help better myself. I am hoping that eventually I can maybe move into the finance department of our company..but it doesn't look promising.

This is clearly either a troll or an idiot. The latter if he actully HAS read the site for months, as he'd know most things he'd want to know from that...
