What to do - Currently at a top 10 Non HYPS school
Hey everyone,
I am a pretty active poster on here so using a different username after some thought. I am currently a senior at a top 10/ Non HYPS school. I have a 3.0 GPA and have not received any real job offer. This is not a "wtf do do since my IBD dreams are shattered" post...don't worry.
The problem lies here. I have an incurable generic disease that weighed heavily on my GPA throughout school. It made it really hard to get to class because of all the walking (it affects my lungs). when I've had jobs in the past it has never had any impact on my job performance because, once I get to the office- it's not an issue since I don't have to walk much.
That said, I am honestly worried about what to do if I do not get a job this year. If I don't get a job the obvious thing to do is try recruiting for ANYTHING again next year. The problem lies here. It is expected by my doctors that I will need a lung transplant within the next 4 years- with the last 1.5-2 years bing unable to work due to fatigue. I have posted on here before about this, and the response was generally "live those last 2 years to your fullest!" etc. But this isn't really possible. As of now I can't really do any sports (I used to be a varsity tennis/XC/golf athlete in HS) The fact that I included golf in the sports that I cannot do well anymore can probably show you how unable I am to do fun stuff.
Considering that a lung transplant is not guaranteed (I have really low weight + a MRD bacteria) or a guarantee of a long life at all (5 year average survival rate) I really want to be able to do something rather than just sit around for the next 4 years- at the end of which I imagine I would be pretty depressed.
If I do not get a job (like I've wanted forever, you don't even know how much this has ben a goal for me) what do you think are viable alternatives for me to do? The "have fun" stuff is out of the question really and more than anything I would like to be independent for awhile (aka get a job). So I was wondering if you had any ideas for what to do so I could get one next year. Or something I could do other than that.
Really sorry to hear your story. If I were in your place, I'd definitely try to start a business and see where it goes. Not only will it you be independent, but it'll greatly help keep your mind off your situation. All the best bud, hang in there.
Best of luck to you, but I don't really know what to advise. The only thing that comes to mind is, if you are into competition but can't do any physical sports, perhaps take up a hobby like poker or chess. Or perhaps do some research if you are at all into that - I would think that could be interesting. Starting an online business sounds interesting, perhaps a non-profit foundation for research into your condition. I am sure you could get some good publicity and sponsorship, and I would imagine this would be intrinsically satisfying. Good luck with whatever you end up doing, and keep your head up!
PS - sounds like you would be interested in a job in Finance - I would be careful with this, especially if IBD - it is surprisingly physically demanding.
That is a shame. Your mindset and desire to work (even with your health condition) makes me think that you would've really deserved that great job under different circumstances.
Don't have any tangible advice for you, but good luck and keep us posted on your health (and career progress).
Cystic fibrosis?
Sorry to hear your story but you just gotta keep trying. Just try to network and get those interviews. I feel that if you land an interview you would have far more impressive stories than the average person. With that said, you should network and really try to land that job opposed to worrying about the disease and how it would interfere with your job later down the line.
And, how the fuck do you people just think you can start a business? You dont fucking come up with million dollar ideas jerking off all day..
vault - speak for yourself tool. Why the fuck should he network like crazy and try to get jobs when he says he wants to be independent. Everyone's creative, and don't tell me you haven't come up with ideas that you were too fuckin pussy to pursue coz you wanted a risk free life, had bullshit to pursue etc. This kid's different - and stop offering dumb advice on the forum. And fyi, i did start my own business on the side, ALONG with doing banking while you were jerking off all day.
LMAO. +1 just because I actually laughed at work.
For serious, CF really sucks. My cousin had/has it. He got a lung transplant, but even those will only like 10-15 years I believe. He's 8-9 years into his transplant and he has some symptoms coming back, so he's on the list for his next transplant now.
It's your life bud.. don't go about things the 'regular' way just because others do. You don't HAVE to go into finance. You don't HAVE to get that top tier IB job. There are plenty of alternatives that you really shouldn't be ashamed of.
When I first started in finance (2+ years ago), I started as a contractor working a BO job @ a bank. There is no shame in starting from the bottom up even if you went to an ivy league. Fuck what everyone else tells you. Unless you want to sit around for 6-12 months waiting for that dream IB job that may never come.. don't be one of those pricks who won't work with people below them (not saying you are at all). Modesty moves people.
Or maybe deep down you just don't want to do finance at all. If your health problem is as bad as you describe, maybe you want to do something bigger and more important in your life than moving money from A to B back to A.
Whatever it is, fuck what everybody else thinks. Do you.
First of all, I shouldnt even respond to you because youre probably one of those asshole finance pricks who get off to posting on this site while youre squatting to urinate.. But in reality, out of the billions of people in the world.. you and VERY FEW people come up with million dollar ideas and just start successful businesses. FYI, I started two businesses on my own; 1 while working FT and going to school.. You cant just start a business and hope to make 10k in revenue; who the fuck wants to waste their time doing that? So before you speak out of that gaping asshole of yours and call people tools, think about the reality of things and not in terms of what you CAN do. And learn how to fucking read you stuck up finance faggot, he said he wants to be INDEPENDANT as in work. Fuck off JD, just because your MD fondles you and has you fetch extra tall frappes on your lunch break doesnt mean you should take it out on others.

Why don't you two go argue somewhere else and show a bit of respect to the OP's situation. Or perhaps provide a useful suggestion to the OP.
^^^ Sorry Dr Joe - I was doing just that, but I guess Vault didn't appreciate that. Vault - I'm done with this argument, you've got valid points where you come from. I thought I offered the OP good advice given the unique situation he's in, if you don't agree I can't change that. Please let's just leave it at that - the guy here needs help. If you think you're in a better position to offer it - great for you, and for him. Take it easy man, we're both thinking about the guy's best interests. I'm not here to lose my respect on this forum, and you too are not.
To the OP - sorry about that bud. This wasn't meant to go downhill this way. Go with whatever suits you best. All the best.
Agreed, best of luck in recruiting and I think a job is the most realistic thing, just my opinion. Poker is a very profitable game and not as boring as a job. (My second job) Wish you success in whatever you do and hope you get better man!
