What types of jobs would someone from a non-finance STEM undergrad be able to get?

I am a junior Chemical Biology major/CS minor with a 3.5 GPA at a target school. I've taken upper division math, data science, and CS courses but nothing econ/business related. I might take Mathematical economics next semester.

My original plan was to go to a PhD program but the job opportunities that would be available aren't that great for the amount of work I'd put in. I'm considering going through with the PhD and then applying for management consulting, data science, or IP law jobs if I can't get a good industry job but that also seems wasteful.

What are fields that I can try and break into with my background? My older brother is also a VP of EFT trading at a very large bank so I guess I have contacts in the industry.

  1. Are you kidding? Every group is scrambling to amass quants right now. Physics + CS = solid
  2. A docket? Just apply everywhere. You don't really have much to lose, yet everything to gain, since you said OCR is nonexistent at your school
  3. It depends on how "boutique" you're talking, but the group to which you apply is more important. Some groups will exclusively hire STEM kids when they're in the market for fresh blood... Fih-nance isn't only about binding pitch books and making shitty Excel models, you know. You should still know VBA, but other desirable languages/skills would include SQL, database management, C++/Java/C#, Python for the progressive, etc. Computers might not be so great at manually binding pitch books, but they're the real moneymakers now, and banks need a couple lowly humans to keep them in check. Paint a pretty picture of why you are the best human to fill that role.
  4. BO, FO, who the fuck cares. The only difference is that accepting a fate hunched in front of a computer, out of sight, may allow you to avoid acquiring stress-induced eczema, hypovitaminosis D, panic disorder, and a layer of flab that makes it appear as though you have fourteen Dos Toros burritos taped to your body underneath your sweat-drenched Bonobos garb
