What's more important, coverletter or resume?

I am not really experienced in finance (have an MA in International Relations, so general statistics and economics). I am however applying for a fellowship at an investment firm and have held a couple United Nations internships/consultancies that are directly relevant. Just curious if I should mention this in my cover letter or just really emphasize it in my resume? Do investment people even read cover letters? I'm still sifting through all the info on these boards, so my bad if I am asking something that's been talked about a million times. Thanks!

Resume. I had people admit to me that they didn't even read my cover letter, lol

I feel like that's easily a trap to spot consistency/inconsistency.

i'm sure people probably get in a habit of looking at your school then gpa then browse the companies you worked at and your roles there and the decision is probably made. its painful because i feel like i can write some compelling cover letters. but my school in a semi-target, my gpa is 3.1 and my experience doesn't strictly pertain to IB/ER, having said that, if they read my cover letter i feel i can be very effective at succinctly relating my duties to the role for which i am applying while conveying a good personality.

73 custom cover leters and resumes. 260 cold email to alumnus. 45 phone conversations and a trip to new york later and i am in the exact same place i was before i began my efforts. i might write up my WSO failure story cuz my journey to FO is in its dying embers.

i will add that the one interview i did manage to get was at a boutique and my cv and letter went right to the MD. the body of the email i sent to him had a note about my cover letter that would have piqued his interest so that was how it got read and that was how the wheels got in motion.

Resume obvi

"They are all former investment bankers that were laid off in the economic collapse that Nancy Pelosi caused. They have no marketable skills, but by God they work hard."

Why would it hurt me? I am a very strong writer and the position requires someone who has good communication and editing skills (along with others of course).

Thanks for the rest of the input...I will focus more on making my resume perfect
