Who should one be networking with?
I been reaching out to lots of folks and some people from my ivy target will respond to me but mainly other analysts from other ivy targets respond at a much higher rate to chat as opposed to my own school alumni? WIll this make a difference? I heard that your own school alumni make all the decisions and not the others?
definitely reach out to as many people as you can that share some commonality to you. It can be someone from Ivy League, someone from your high school, someone with the same interest as you. Literally anything. I got helped by multiple people who didn’t go to the same school as I did but yeah going to the same school does help but you should be reaching out to others as well that share some commonality
Thanks, been reaching out to hundreds and getting ~5% response rate. Will keep at it
Did not get a single BB/EB interview from alumni connect, as they were all part of the exclusive clubs at our school. Got into I. late and missed the chance to join some of these. 90% of my interviews were from resume drops or non-alumni so it does happen.
I got some interviews from just resume drops but all my friends who are doing recruiitng BB rn only got interviews and superdays through networking unlike me who has yet to.
I think that typically at a target & BB, banks will have their own alumni-specific recruiting team, so it's much easier to speak with alumni from your school. If that isn't working out, I also just reached out to as many people as I could, and had people reply to me saying they were interested in my profile, and after coffee chatting with them, I would ask them to refer me to the recruiting team.
I would also consider asking to speak with higher ups, even if it isn't IB specific. In one case, I was lucky to speak with an MD in private credit at a BB, had a really good coffee chat, and he referred me to the IB department since that's what I expressed more interest in.
I think at EB's, smaller banks, and Banks with a robust HR, it doesn't really matter as it'll all generally be in the same process.
I have had greater success reaching out to mid level Associates (more than 1 year in the role)
Analysts often seem a bit too overwhelmed to actually connect or don't want to take the risk to try and connect you up
VP's have been hit or miss for me
MD's seem to respond when sucking up a bit
What you mean by sucking up, just being more enthusiastic about them?
I send a general email to like 50 folks at each BB, so probably like 35 analysts, 10 associates, and then like 2-3 vp/md. Usually only 2nd/ 3rd year analysts respond and thats it
