Why isn’t Consulting —> IB (or vice versa) more popular / allowed?
Both skillsets seem to complement each other super well. For those looking to exit to industry, why isn’t this path more popular for overall skills development?
I could see a skillset like this being super useful for a startup.
These are both stepping stone careers, means to an end. You have a very wide menu of options from either path and don't need the additional stepping stone, so why add an unnecessary stop?
It is not seen so often since it does not make a lot of sense. If you want to work in finance, plenty of options are open to you from MBB (e.g., VC, Growth Equity, PE). Why would you recruit for IB? If you want to do so, the most realistic option would be post MBA associate. However, post MBA banking isn't nearly as prestigious as post UG banking. This only helps you if you want to be a career banker.
I've seen finance majors and laterals in banking struggle to put together a basic 3-stmt model after years of being on the job. I can't imagine a consultant trying to get up to speed on that stuff on a live deal
