Working essentially two jobs at the same company and getting paid for both?

Has anyone here actually found a way to work two jobs at the same company and essentially be paid for both.

Currently, I'm in a position at my company where my current job is somewhat easy for me. I get paid decent, not great, but the job is very stress free. I'm exploring options, and would most likely almost be able to hold down two roles. My options are to find something outside my company or try to propose a deal where I could hold down dual roles. People at my company have done this prior and currently, so I know its a possbily.

My take aways are:

(1) stay in current role, find something outside the company and try to perform both roles.

(2) propose internally that I cover two jobs. They are in separate departments, so it would be cross utilization. The only downside I see is that if this falls through, I opend myself up to (a) looking like I want to leave and (b) most likely getting more work in my current role as I've "expressed" I have more time.

(3) find something completely detached from my current company, but would have to start  the pay at basically double what I make. I don't need to leave but also not trying to find something at pays slightly more for a bigger headache.

What does everyone think or have they doen something similar?
