Worth networking at all for On-cycle

At an EB in NY (~20 class size) that has good exits but not consistent.

I've noticed a specific MF group that I'm interested in, and there's a MD who was an analyst at my firm in the past. Is it worth it to grab coffee with him to learn more about the group and get support from him? Or should I just stick with headhunters and second years/new associates?
