How to Respond to an Upset MD Email in 5 Easy Steps

Here's how to deal with an upset MD email in 5 easy steps.

Step 1: You don't want to greet your MD with "hi", "hello", "how are you doing", etc. They may take it as you being sarcastic. So what you wanna say instead is something along the lines of "first off", "first of all", or "let me tell you something real quick". That lets the MD know you have a few points you need to make and that will prepare them for the rest of the email.

Step 2: You want to write your words in ALL CAPS, and if you don't want to write the whole email in all caps, you're gonna want to write SPECIFIC words in all caps. This lets the MD know this is a professional email and not an argument.

Step 3: Use exclamation points at the end of every sentence. The more you use, the better. This helps the MD understand how passionate you are about their pitch materials, which will immediately put them in a state of comfort, knowing how much you care about their meeting.

Step 4: Only respond to one thing in the MD's email. There's no need to respond to everything, that may take too much time and you've got work to do. So you wanna find the one thing the MD is wrong about and only address that. For example, if they're saying, the "client logo is old", "the spread to the treasury looks off", and "why are we showing 200% accretion?"; you wanna say something like "that spread came from DCM this morning".

Step 5: You wanna let them know what time you'll be logging off for happy hour and which bar you're gonna be at. This lets the MD know you don't have to keep communicating via email and you can instead communicate in person.

After you follow these 5 steps you'll probably never have to deal with these emails again, because more than likely they'll just come to your desk and handle it in person.

And once that meeting is over and you're in your apartment, at happy hour, or in the hospital, you can say "Wow, MBA_Moron taught me again"
