Abolish the TSA

So now that Osama is dead can I stop taking my shoes off at the airport? I'm not so ignorant to believe that by virtue of his death, terrorism will come to an abrupt end. I'm also not so ignorant to believe that scanners and TSA goons feeling me up is much of a barrier to committed terrorists or even accidents and trials. Does the TSA really do anything productive? If we do abolish it, how should we handle airport security?

Edmundo BravermanCouldn't agree more. Do away with all security, reduce ticket prices by the amount saved, and allow passengers to carry guns aboard like we could until the mid-1970's.
Was that actually allowed back then? My dad tells me stories about when he would pack his .357 in his carry on with ammo because he didn't want it lost. lol
HireUp212Forget security and just have a military sniper in plainclothes assigned to each plane. I heard that's what Israeli airlines do.
Kinda like Air Marshals? I agree tho. Israel handles this way better than we do. Most of their airports are stocked with ex-mossad guys looking for conspicuous travelers

Crazy to think that I was a kid the last time I simply walked onto a plane. The thought of boarding an airplane without the TSA seems almost unthinkable after so long.

I understand the government put the TSA in place to give the appearance of doing something to protect us post 9/11 (and prop up the air travel). But does anybody actually think the TSA is actually necessary now? It seems like every few months somebody accidentally brings a gun/knife/bottle of shampoo on a plane because they forgot it was in their carry on.

And anyways, terrorists are not going to attack a plane again...they were only successful because nobody on the planes thought they were going to crash them into buildings. Once their plans became clear, you got United 93.

So why are they ramping up security with the body scans? And even trying to unionize? If things are bad now...

Smuggling things on planes is fairly easy. I always carry on toothpaste and mouthwash. If I were so inclined, I could easily brew some PETN and smuggle it on board a plane. There really is nothing to protect us from a driven individual, willing to die through a suicide attack on a plane.

I think everyone's bag should go through a metal detector.

1) On my last 3 flights, I walked right through security with bottles of liquids in my bag. Didn't put them in a plastic baby bag. Didn't announce them. Just sent them right through the scanner and nothing happened. Now, granted, I imagine a metal weapon would be more likely to set something off, but take it as one data point that the rules we have are worthless. 2) Why are planes special? Is it because of the fear of flying? Why don't we have the same security for Amtrak trains? Seems like the casualties from derailing a train would be comparable (I could be wrong) and yet any terrorist would be able to bring a rolling suitcase of explosives aboard a train any day.
3) Forget security and just have a military sniper in plainclothes assigned to each plane. I heard that's what Israeli airlines do.
