ADVICE NEEDED - Romantic Relationship in IB?

For those of you in IB or any high stress/hour job that have girlfriends, fiancée, wives, or just started seeing someone one with no label yet (my case). How do you do it? In the beginning stages with work in IB how do you find the time and manage the excess "emotional strain" of building/having a relationship with someone. Albeit, I do think this is more applicable when there's no label yet as the future is still very up in the air and both of you are stilling feeling it out.

But any advice would be appreciated for my typical IB love story, met on hinge... lmao. Long story short talked and went on a handful of dates the last few weeks, we've had a great time together. She moved back to where she is from temporarily but will be moving back in September. She has big life moments/changes coming up with just graduating and moving to nyc/new job and is open to a relationship (not now, too soon for that) but isn't her first priority which is understandable.

Looking for any advice on how to take the slow approach to dating since that isn't usually my style and how to balance it with IB but I don't wanna fuck this one up. Also as much of a bitch this is gonna make me sound, please be nice I've had a long few weeks

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights and advice on managing romantic relationships while working in Investment Banking (IB):

Balancing Relationships and IB:

  1. Time Management:

    • Efficient Use of Time: Make the most of your limited free time. For instance, if you have protected Saturdays, use them to invest in your relationship.
    • Short Breaks: Utilize short breaks during the day, like lunch breaks, to connect with your partner. Even a quick call or text can help maintain the connection.
  2. Communication:

    • Open Dialogue: Be transparent about your work schedule and the demands of your job. This helps set realistic expectations.
    • Active Listening: Focus on her rather than yourself during conversations. Ask about her interests, family, job, and opinions. This not only keeps the conversation going but also shows that you care.
  3. Emotional Support:

    • Mutual Understanding: Recognize that both of you are going through significant life changes. Support each other through these transitions.
    • Mental Health: Prioritize your mental health by spending time with friends and engaging in activities that help you unwind.
  4. Personal Development:

    • Find Yourself: Discover what you enjoy outside of work. Whether it's reading, hiking, or any other hobby, having personal interests makes you more interesting and balanced.
    • Confidence Building: Post-IB, many find their confidence significantly higher. Use this as motivation to get through the tough times.

Practical Tips:

  • Slow Approach: Since she is not ready for a relationship right now, take it slow. Focus on building a strong foundation of friendship and understanding.
  • Quality Over Quantity: When you do spend time together, make it meaningful. Plan activities that both of you enjoy and that allow for genuine connection.
  • Stay Connected: Even if she is temporarily away, stay in touch through regular communication. This helps maintain the bond and shows your commitment.

Additional Insights:

  • Self-Improvement: Use your free time to improve yourself, whether it's through working out, learning new skills, or exploring new interests. This not only benefits you but also makes you a more well-rounded partner.
  • Support System: Lean on your friends and family for support. They can provide valuable advice and help you navigate the challenges of balancing work and a relationship.

Remember, it's all about finding a balance that works for both of you. Good luck with your IB love story!

In short, it depends on your hours and her willingness. I'm not in IB myself, but shortly dated someone from a very demanding group and chats/calls were taking place late at night, think 3 am. You have to make her aware of your hours and hope she'll be willing to sacrifice some sleep to talk to you. Then you can spend more time during weekends, but she has to be understanding to make it work. Not every person will be willing to accommodate to your busy schedule. This is why even many associates are still single even though their schedules get better. The same applies to other demanding industries. You didn't tell what industry she's going to work at, but I generally suggest dating people from demanding industries as well because they are more realistic about the busy schedule and IB hours.

She's probs works like 50 hours a week with a lil more stress then a normal job. But no not IB or business/finance related. Fortunately my group also is not as crazy as the person you shortly dated was, so that also helps my case. Just have to work on taking it slow and I should be fine

Make a decision how much you like her. If you really like her, shower her with affection and flowers when you have the time. Engage in athletic hobbies together so you can get a workout in addition to hanging out. Even if it is only going for a walk together or gym together.
