Good times, but keep in mind that it's a poor country. If you leave your resort, you'll probably have to be escorted, and that could well be by a local gang. Expect to be extorted for cash at some point, whether some bucks at the airport by security or by the police (happens all the time). Girls love rich guys, just don't meet family, and there are services for girls if you're into that. Overall a good vacation spot.

Puerto Plata is where most people stay, and it's pretty alright. You should venture down to the capital and check it out during the trip.

I've lived / worked in poor parts of SA for about 2.5 years and I'm fluent in Spanish. I'm accustomed and enjoy being in off the beaten path type situations. That said, I'm not as familar with the DR. Do you think it is legitimately dangerous or just kinda sketchy (especially for people not used to traveling). I was just planning on traveling around and staying in hostels and things of that nature. Wasn't gonna do the whole resort thing. Based on your experience is that advisable?

No. I do not advise that lol. Unless you're traveling with a friend who is a local / native, that is. Otherwise, I really advise against doing that.

EDIT: What is SA? I can only think of South Africa and Saudi Arabia. I also neglected to consider that you're fluent in Spanish. If you can get yourself through semi-dangerous situations, go ahead and do what you said.

I'm just looking to chill, check out some nice beaches, speak some spanish, that kinda stuff. The flights to the DR are super cheap right now that is why I even had this idea. The goal was to just be somewhere nice where I'm not blowing a ton of cash. Not trying to go on some party/hooker binder.

TheGrindAre you looking to just relax or do you need women, partying, etc?

Go to Sosua. You won't regret it. Very nice beach town, and much better than doing a resort because those are money pits and keep you secluded in a bubble. good cross section of tourists to hang out with in cafes (lots of russian, european, canadian, and new yorkers of course) A bit dodgy here and there but so long as you don't do anything stupid (visible money clips, camera hanging from your neck, walking alone late at night etc) you'll be fine. Good bargain hotels or you can rent a house/villa on airbnb.com on the cheap. You'll have a ton of women propositioning you, though-but that's just cost of doing business.

friend went two years ago. friend almost didnt return, ran his pockets at gun point. Stay in the resort for sure.

enjoy dr op

A few friends have gone and their reactions upon return have been, "meh". Didn't hate it, didn't love it, probably won't go back. Look into Cayman or Turks -- have always wanted to go there...
