Anyone ever consider pivoting to a less sedentary job?
The more I work in an office/at home, the more I wish my job involved more movement and even the opportunity to get outside sometimes. I did finance and CS in school, work in data now, but can't help wanting a job that isn't at a desk. When I worked retail in school, I honestly loved walking around all day, stacking shelves, etc. I'm sure physical labor won't be as appealing when I'm older, but I keep wishing I maybe hadn't chosen such sedentary skills.
Anyone else feel this way? Ever thought about career pivot to something else and if so, what? I thought maybe some area of real estate could involve getting out and about evaluating properties every now and then, but not exactly sure how lucrative something like that could be vs. sucking it up and sitting at my desk
how about this - $60k to jerk off in the mountains all summer.
sitting at a desk is satisfactory but there's nothing quite like working with your hands.
edit: search The Quiet Life of the King of the Mountain on YouTube if you cant see the vid I posted (I cant)
There are finance jobs with more "movement outside of an office or your home", i.e. in VC or PE. Visiting startups, partners, events, scouting, etc - quite a fair bit of action. You do site visits, meet people all the time outside the office and it is very interesting.
Not during a pandemic, but that'll change soon.
VC/PE was always a pipe dream for me for this reason. Not sure if the online meetings trend will continue after covid. I prefer in person.
Would probably need to go the MBA route to break in I’d imagine, but I’m not opposed to that
I have met a decent chunk of PE folks without an MBA. some have startup experience, some had their own ventures, some are IBD pros. But an MBA would help if you want to land a job at a top shop. Plus the network.
I worked a normal labor/maintenance job when I was in high school and during college and it was my favorite job I've ever had. I loved the guys I worked with too. Find myself thinking back to that job and those people quite often. The grass is always greener I guess.
Spiritually, manual labor is prestigious as you can work with your hands and pray at the same time. It is the Benedictine motto: "Ora et Labora."
