Anyone in the U.S. have plans to retire outside of it?
Still in the early stages of my career and I definitely enjoy what I do for a living, so it’s not misery that is making me think about retirement. Merely wondering where I’ll be when it’s all said and done.
I wanted to hear if anyone here/anyone you know have done this before/plan to, and if so, where?
How do you plan to accomplish this?
What’s your timeline? How much money do you think it would take for you to pull this off? Would you completely re-plant roots or periodically come back?
I plan to buy a place in Valencia, Spain in a few years, but don't intend to live there full time. I would like to bounce between Valencia, NYC, SoCal, and SC. I lived in Valencia, Spain for 6 months in undergrad and am moving back there for 3 months in January 2027.
Also, when I get a place in Valencia I will hop over to Italy periodically as Italy is the shit. I'd rather live in Spain though.
Spain is my number 1 option since I can get citizenship fast-tracked. Hoping to either retire there or even work and I already know the language, so there’s no pains there.
Yeah I love the culture in Spain. I can imagine hitting up a local restaurant every night.
1/2 in Thailand (but travel while there) and 1/2 back in my hometown Honolulu to maintain social connections and a plus if my kids go to college there.
My wife and I have discussed it. Hard to say now what the plan is when I’m not even 40, don’t have kids yet, etc. Lots of life still to live between then and now.
I feel it, same here. Not even married but it is nice to think about. Also curious about taking my career abroad, so that’s part of the reason why I’m thinking about it. If not in the next 5-10 years, then maybe when I retire.
Still early in my career, but plan to spend half the year in the Dominican Republic or Puerto Rico
Yes, but forget about waiting until retirement, another school shooting in this country has made me feel that I should relocate my family to Western Europe or a cool country in Asia (e.g. Japan, South Korea)
Yes, before you @ me, I know the probability of a child in the US getting killed in a school shooting is 0.0000002%, but in other countries it's exactly 0%. Period. Full stop.
I also hate that I have to constantly keep my head on a swivel and be very mean when out in public. I've lost track of the number of times in public where I kept walking or ignored someone who could genuinely be needing help, because you never know if it's going to be some unhinged lunatic with a gun.
And in other countries you’ll be arrested for mean tweets or questioning why the police cover for rape gangs. Nowhere is perfect.
