Baltimore - need advice

What are some of your favorite places/things to do in the city? What are the best neighborhoods to live in and which ones should I avoid? Thanks

You really have to spend some time Baltimore to understand the neighborhoods. What appears nice during a visit is very different living there. For example, I lived in Mount Vernon which is great during the day and has tourists walking around. At night, it becomes night of the living dead with drug zombies everywhere. You'll be literally running from your car to apartment.

Back then, Fell's Point was much the same. Looks really nice, quaint, and gentrified during the day but your chances of getting stabbed at night were just about as good as anywhere. Doubt too much has changed in that regards since.

I really liked Locus Point. Look at it on a map, it's basically a peninsula with a single road going in or out. Hence, you don't get as much rando foot traffic as the other neighborhoods. In addition, it's right next to Federal Hill and has a lot great neighborhood bars.

I lived there almost 15 years ago so not sure on the latest but there also used to be a water taxi that took you from Locust Point to the Inner Harbor. I used it to commute to Johns Hopkins University Carey Business School. If you can think of a cooler way to commute to your class or work downtown, let me know!

Baltimore is a sneaky great city. I moved here a couple years ago for a job opp and fell in love with it. Lots of people shit on it but it has a lot going for it.

Like any city, there’s going to be places you don’t want to go. Unlike other cities, Baltimore can go from extremely safe to dangerous on a block-to-block basis. For that reason, I wouldn’t recommended signing a lease site unseen.

A general rule of thumb is that the closer to the harbor you are, the safer you are. (Look up the black butterfly and the white L if you want some background into the gentrification/racial politics).

Fed Hill is for the post-grad life. 22-28 year olds live like they’re still in college.

Locus Point is generally all families and a little slower.

Harbor East + Harbor Point upscale shopping by and dining. Lots of recent development and companies moving their buildings there from the central business district.

Fells Point has a lot of bars and restaurants. Great for a night out or living on one of the side streets where it’s a little quieter than Broadway/Thames.

Canton has great neighborhood bars. If you ever wanted to be a regular at a bar, live in Canton.

All of the above are very safe but crime still does happen from time to time, like anywhere.
