Ok guys, sometimes we just have to discuss important issues even if they've got nothing to do with the street. Some events are monumental and earth shattering. Sometimes even a hardcore cynic like me starts to hum the anthem and instinctively squeezes out a smile while placing hand over heart.
Yep. Today it happened, I am actually proud of my government for once and I want to share it with you monkeys...
There is no doubt that we have subjugated to the powers of piss poor beer for way too long. I pretty much have to bully waitresses and threaten bartenders in order to get them to stock something decent. For those of you interested in learning the economic background to this story, go and check out Beer Wars, a fascinating tale about how Anheuser Busch and their lobby keeps us swimming in piss poor light lagers.
Well...shockingly it seems that our inept regulators from both sides of the isle are doing something to correct this injustice. Earlier this week, legislation was introduced in the Senate that would lower excise taxes on small breweries. This brings hope to us proper lushes that one day soon, we will have more options in bars than before. This momentous event may lead to a day when I no longer have to order that liquid turd enema called Guinness in lieu of a true dark stout.
The alcohol industry brings in over $100 billion a year in revenue, it's time some of the quality stuff got a chance to grow. I feel like I am at the dawn of the tech bubble for brews. If only Dogfish Head and Left Hand Breweries sold shares...
But since St. Pattie's is here I want to hear about your favorite beer. I am just now cracking the first one of the day, so I have lots of work to do...
What is that one unique little flavor or taste that you cannot get in most every public drinking place? What little craft beers are your faves and what do you love about them?

Left Hand Milk Stout is amazing. I love the sweet taste and smoothness. Big fan of the Stone brewery too. Great microwbrews that are very enjoyable. If you are ever in San Diego its worth a trip to the Stone brewery and bistro
Just tried milk stout for the first time yesterday, and I am a huge fan.
Bourbon barrel ale from Kentucky Ale is really good but hard to come by in the northeast. I usually end up drinking Sam Adams Boston Lager or Octoberfest if it's fall.
I like a Houston brewery called St. Arnolds brewery. Make some damn fine brews. I like most dark beers and love Octoberfest beers. I'm a beer snob, there, I said it.
I drink a lot of Shiner Bock when I'm down that way.
Shiner Bock is a good beer for sure.
Franziskaner was the tastiest beer I ever tried, but not too many places serve it.

I can't be happier to hear that our government is encouraging small brewers to grow their business. Althoug if I have some fucking little hipster bitch tell me that I should be drinking Dogfish Head instead of an Old Rasputin or a Double Bastard on the basis of "It's Dogfish Head" without any reason, I am going to tear that twat waffle a new one.
That said, when I finally get to sit down and drink, I have a bottle of Pliny the Elder, a 6 of Kona's Pipeline Porter and a 6 of DeSchutes Inversion IPA to enjoy... Although now that you mention it, I need to pick up some Left Hand, Ska, Durango Steamworks and Tommy Knocker when I get a chance.
To the crux of the matter though, I really don't have a favorite. It's a matter of finding things that I appreciate or just don't like. And yes... I can't wait to see good beer appear on the shelves of more stores.

It's ok, not my favorite Marzen/Octoberfest though. My favorite Octoberfest beer is definitely the seasonal that St. Arnolds makes here in Houston.

I love yooz guys but Shiner Bock is the equivalent of peeing up into the air and calling it a waterfall. That stuff is nasty, nastier than the junk that comes out after having 20 of them on an empty stomach. Worst of all, when I landed in Houston and had my first one ever at the airport...the pygmy inca midget serving me did not believe I was the guy in my driver's license, passport and FOID card photos. I had to battle rap Pocahontas just to have that bootay. Neva again, gentlemen!
Haha Midas! Shiner was my entry point into bocks and dark beers. I rarely drink shiner anymore unless I'm wanting a change or that's all there is.
You sir are exempt from the shame of drinking Shiner Knob as it has been established that you do God's work. If I may suggest some quality dark beers that I know are on hand at Spec's give: Bell's Expedition Stout, Brooklyn Brewery Double Chocolate Stout and Victory Storm King a shot.

I went to Beerfest in AC the past 2 years, and they always have some quality brews. Any beer fan should definitely check it out. I couldn't tell you any of the names though...pregaming beerfest with $2 shots doesn't help short-term memory...

Some of you don't know what you're talking about, but each of these is delicious. I also like Mc Chouffe and La Chouffe.
For some good pubs in London, look around the LSE. The area around the barristers' chambers hasn't changed much in several hundred years, so a lot of the pubs have been there for quite a while. The Edgar Wallace and The Seven Stars regularly rotate out small-batch English bitters. When they cash a keg, they get something else, so there is always something tasty on tap.
Don't bring loud, rowdy assholes, though, as it's never wise to be too drunk around England's most powerful lawyers.

I remember freshman year in college my friends and I thought Corona was the pinnacle of beers. I can barely drink it now. Been a fan of Guinness and Hoegaarden lately.

Decent: Valhalla-54th and 9th Ave Pony Bar- 45th and 10th Ave Spitzers- Rivington and Ludlow (Kind of divey but in an LES way) Ginger Man- 36th and 5th BXL- 2 of them, one on 43rd and 6th, the other on the East side Burp Castle-7th and 2nd David Copperfield's-74th and York
These are just Manhattan ones; there are plenty in Brooklyn and Astoria as well.
Can't think of any that are really "upscale" per se, though a lot of upscale bars now have small-but-nice-beer ("well-curated" as my more pretentious beer-snob friends would put it) selections. Maybe BXL.
My favorite beers: 1) I celebrate Dogfish Head, Troeg and Captain Lawrence's entire catalogues 2) My favorite Belgian is Rochefort-like drinking velvet. 3) My favorite UK beer is Old Speckled Hen-love the Guiness texture with a more interesting flavor.

Also, most of what comes from Three Floyds and Bell's is pretty fucking good. Goose Island, Boulevard, and Stone make some very interesting beers that I really like, too.

asides from the fact that liquor and wine are vastly superior to beer, the very few times i will drink beer it is usually a stout a la car bomb or a very light wheat beer, hate everything inbetween

I'm not sure I've ever had a bad Belgian beer. The shit those monks crank out is unreal. I was in Bruges for the weekend a couple weeks ago and it was like Heaven.
I've lived in Paris for over two years and I bet I haven't had 200 beers the whole time I've been here (for a frame of reference, I'd average about 40 beers a week in New Orleans). Now I want to move to Belgium. Everyone speaks English and the beer is out of this world.

In Canada it's even worse. Molson Canadian made from Canda lol... simply pathetic. Imported stuff is cheap and tasteless with very few exceptions.
With that being said, I really like Leinenkugel's Honey Weiss, Newcastle, Killian's, and there's a few more. I don't get to try out too many different kinds of beers sadly, I try to get a six pack a week of something different (see: expensive).
A micro-brewery/bar has a beer around here called "something something black hole of deliciousness" that's a cherry stout that's pretty good.... kinda wanna try some more
