So you think the unrest is just because of the food instead of the perceived inequality, lower coordination costs, higher access to information and sense of empowerment? Have you ever lived in an undeveloped country (yes, they are undeveloped, if not sub or infradeveloped).?
Using your terms, El_Mono, rising food prices sharply exacerbate perceived inequality and the governments' sense of empowerment and as a result are more likely to be the final push of an oppressed people into revolt. Access to info and lower coordination costs are obviously characteristic of an oppressive government, but those factors aren't going to light the spark. If I'm not being clear let me know.
Per your question about living in an undeveloped country - no. I live in Connecticut.
