Correcting people incorrectly spelling your name
One for the ethnic minorities out there or those of you with more unusual names. How do you go about correcting someone more senior than you who you only have a few clients with but keeps incorrectly spelling your name or using a shorthand form?
This is the only guy i've ever come across who seems to be too lazy/inept to read my email address etc. and just copy that. My first name is only four letters long and he keeps messing it up.
He doesn't do this to anyone else so it's not a case of him making up nicknames for everyone. I'm tempted to respond to an email with "my name is spelt ****" then carry on with a normal response, but feel this might come across as rude.
I would probably do it in person while your receiving corrections on a deck or something. Somewhat related note..idk if this is the case for just French or Spanish names but I find it annoying when you introduce yourself and pronounce your name like you would in your native language as opposed to the English pronunciation.
As a somewhat expected result of working in Asia, my (English) name gets misspelt and mispronounced. A lot. I've learnt to just ignore it, since it doesn't really make a big difference anyway.
I guess, but isn't it kind of a respect thing? As in, this guy isn't even important enough for me to know his name? I get that yeah it doesn't matter for people you don't see often but not a colleague you work on projects with.
Just keep signing your emails with your first name only but add 2 to the font size every time he messes it up.
Love that idea
It happens to me all the time as well and I have a rather normal name. You should just ignore it or sign your emails in a way they see your name being properly spelled.
Gold.
"One time, I was in the Hamptons, and I got a call from our MD asking me to finish up a few things. I just hate getting sand in my laptop, so I called up the ol' Changster and asked him if he wouldn't mind helping me out quickly. "You're a machine, man! Shouldn't take more than a couple, ten hours," I encouraged him.
I could hear him getting into the huffing part of his impersonation over the phone, and I was curious how that lighthearted snarl might convey itself cellularly. But then he added a new element to his routine, screaming, "FINE. JUST FUCKING STOP CALLING ME CHANG! I'M KOREAN. MY LAST NAME IS LEE," and slamming down the phone.
What a joker! Love that guy"
The last thing you want to do is make the guy feel uncomfortable, especially since he is senior. Just look for a subtle way to do it that will not put him on the spot or makes him feel foolish.
This is the best kind of passive-aggressive.
