Could you increase your IQ or increase your intelligence?

Hard work is necessary to be successful anywhere. But having a high baseline of intelligence would make it easier for achieving success. I get good grades but envy friends that get them without as much effort. I am not lazy but if I was smarter I could get more things done in a quicker amount of time. Do you guys think that intelligence can be increased through training from programs such as luminosity or reading more ? Or is it something fixed?

Your IQ can be manipulated, it's not a science. As for the intelligence you have regardless of what an IQ test says, no idea.

You might not be able to increase your IQ, but there are ways you can do things quicker/better. Pattern recognition, heuristics, etc can improve the way you learn, which can help you achieve success.

Intelligence isn't really understood that well in psychology today. There are a handful of popular theories on how to define it and how it's distributed throughout the brain.

Just read books, dude.

Agree with everything said above. You're still in school, but i think you'll find that in the real world, learning foreign concepts quickly is not terribly important (at least in ~90% of careers). What will be important is how comfortable you are with concepts within your circle of competence (and also social skills like if you can sell you're ideas or lead teams).

Maybe you don't have much control over how quickly you learn foreign concepts, but you get more and more familiar with your circle of competence through practice.

In school, practice is called studying (luminosity sounds to me like a waste of time/marketing gimmick). If you're trying to get better at math, learn to question every equation presented to you. Do NOT simply memorize. Look up proofs for the pythagorean theorem for example and then try to think of ways you could DISPROVE it (you won't be able to of course, but try anyway). This is what smart math types do - they dissect every equation their presented with (usually quickly in their heads) and it trains them in working with equations.

I can speak to how to do well in math because i was good at math. It's harder for me to speak to how to be good at english, as i was not as good it this, but i think a good general principle here is try to befriend somebody who performs well in the topic, and let them rub off on you. Get your good-at-english friend to edit all your papers. Also i think english is a topic were it would serve you well to just try to mimic somebody who's good at it. How does your friend organize his/her thoughts? Try organizing your thoughts the exact same way a couple time. What semantic tools does your friend use? Try using the same ones, in the same way.

Hope this is somewhat helpful
