Country Club Junior Memberships
Interested in joining a country club in the nyc area for golf. Exact location TBD - depending on where I settle down, but curious to get perspectives / datapoints on junior memberships (e.g., below 35) for some of the top clubs around the city. Think ones like Bayonne, Baltusrol, Winged Foot, Garden City, etc.
Just looking for an idea of what the typical cost / experience is like at these places. Understood on the need to know people to get in, but any specific detail on which of these caliber clubs offer junior memberships and their associated cost would be helpful.
Thanks

First off, a lot of these clubs don't offer junior memberships. People are paying several hundred thousands dollars of initiation and tens of thousands a year to be members in those places, and part of the reason for that is explicitly so that the club isn't overloaded with random people taking up tee times (or you'll only be eligible to play on weekdays between like 10-2 or something ridiculous).
Second, I'd think long and hard about the costs and benefits of those clubs. I did a junior membership at a club in the same geographic radius as those places and then joined as a full member, and it has been lovely. There is a real community. I've made friends, business contacts, etc. No, it's not on the Top 100 Courses in America, but it isn't a municipal course, either. I have a friend who did a junior membership at Deepdale for a couple summers, and I played there a couple times, and honestly? It kinda sucked. You come off the course and the clubhouse was empty. Yes, it is a gorgeous course, but at the end of the day there are a lot of gorgeous places to play golf and unless you are really fucking serious about the game, I think the people and the ambiance (and obviously the cost) make far more of a difference. Saving $5,000 a year on your dues means getting to take several trips a year to epic golf courses elsewhere. Go play Whistling Straights or Shadow Creek!
It just isn't worth it to pay for the label, essentially. Or I don't think so, I guess your mileage may vary on that.
