Day off for Sibling Graduation

I feel like an idiot writing this. This summer I'm working at a BB firm and of course I'm looking to make a good impression. My brother's HS graduation date wasn't set and I joked with my friends that I would just go for that Saturday (within driving distance of NY) but not spend any nights there because of the demands of the job. Turns out his graduation is on a weekday during the second week of my internship. I can't really foresee a circumstance in which I don't go to the graduation (nor do I want to not go, obviously), but now I'm paranoid about how to bring it up with the team. Surely they understand that I will miss that day of work/work partially remotely that day? I know this job comes with a lot of sacrifices but this situation feels different...

If it’s during the second week of your internship then there’s a decent chance you’re going to be in training then anyways. At the BB I interned at, the first two weeks were a remote 9-5 training by Training the Street. Maybe you can reach out to someone who interned at that bank before from your school and ask if they remember the schedule. If they end up forwarding and it ends up being it’s not remote training, then I would just email the team / whoever called you to give you the offer / you feel comfortable with and say that you just found out about the graduation date, and would have to miss part of that day for it, but are open to working remotely and making up any time you miss. They should appreciate the early heads up. Otherwise if it’s remote training then no one really needs to know where you are for it IMO

If it’s training, you’re fine. If you’re on the desk and you want to make a good impression don’t go. The BB I worked at we hit the desk after the first week.

An intern in my class missed a day for sibling grad and got the return no problem. These people are tripping sack, you have 50+ days to make an impression missing one day will not kill you

Won't be a big deal if you just tell them it's your sibling's graduation. They won't have issue.

I had the same dilemma with my gf's graduation (ours was 2 days apart) and I just said I have 2 graduations - one is the main university one and the other is an econ department specific one with prizes. Some BS in other words. Was completely fine anyhow

seriously, if can't even go for a once in a lifetime event, of someone from your family, because your boss will say "no, align this pptx thx" then fucking reconsider your firm choice

Unfortunately, anyone telling you it won’t be an issue is wrong. If you’re out of training and on the desk it won’t be a good look. I’ve been in this industry long enough  at this point to know it’s full of psychos. Anything will be used against you when it comes to decision time unfortunately.

Again, not how it should be but the truth. I would advise college kids to take other career paths frankly but that’s an entirely different story not for this thread.

Go to your brother’s graduation, it’s just for a few hours.  Tell the team and HR well in advance, block out your calendar, and make sure that you say you’re still active on emails/calls.  When you go, make sure to check emails and messages and respond.  Other than that, family first imo.
