DB/Commerzbank proposed merger
So, the German government is pushing for this solution for two troubled banks, that are already first and second largest in Germany, making them a potential giant.
The difference in size compared to what's left of the Germany banking sector (Berenberg, Hypovereinsbank) is astounding but that's where the good news end. Both DB and Commerzbank have been in trouble for years, DB was rightfully eliminating operations that didn't do well to avoid leaving a gigantic crater, it looks to me the German government doesn't know what it's doing at all. The merger essentially goes in the opposite direction of DB's downsizing, showing confusionary leadership and lack of vision. It is however in Merkel's style to deal with problems: ''kick the can down the road and hope the problem disappears'', seen with Greece/the Eurozone issues and migration issues as well.
Indeed if the merger goes through, the new gigabank will gain a number of years, but in general the bigger the organization is, the harder it is to reform it and you'll get large organizations both needing a major overhaul, making it unlikely to achieve anything at all.
Kind of interested in hearing from those who work for either bank.
Germany is good at a lot of things, unfortunately finance is not of them. Unfortunately I have both shares in DB and Commerzbank. Lost all hope for them to ever go up anyway, so I guess it can only get better from here if the merger rumors are going to be true. Right??
I assume you can wait for the merger to go through and then get rid of them.
I agree, the gov't does not know what they are doing. Two weak banks don't make a strong one.
Also, Germany has got to catch up on finance or future's looking dryyyy...
