Dealing w brainfog and being adrift

I was wondering how you guys deal with brainfog and shitty autopilot

just come out of a long week that could easily have been avoided if I just planned correctly; for the past few weeks Ive had 0 drive and have been procrastinating like crazy.

My brain just feels like it isn’t there, I can’t focus on anything. I downsized most of my scrolling (deleted instagram, occasionally scroll on linkedin lol). But I feel like theres something else thats clogging things up.

I feel like I just have so much to do that I can’t do any of it even though I realistically have enough time for it all.

Im just rambling to get this off my chest lol, wonder if you guys have any advice or suggestions on what I can tweak.

I get the feeling. I had a lot of issues in college with the same thing. Others have good recommendations, I'll recommend some too

  • Do something you really don't want to do first thing in the mornings. Could be dragging yourself out of bed early, could be a cold shower, could be gym or running. Either way, doing something that your body doesn't want to do sets you up for a day where everything else is easier. It's called eating the frog
  • 2 minute strategy. When you don't want to do something, don't say "I'm going to finish this really long task", just say "I'll do this thing for 2 minutes". Oftentimes the biggest barrier to us doing something is just inertia.
  • Replace those bad habits with good ones. I deleted all social media and now whenever I reach for my phone I force myself to read the FT or WSJ, or respond to emails
  • Pomodoro timer. Massive help to keep you honest
  • Reward pairing. Pair something you really like with something you don't like. If you hate reading 10k's, but love listening to podcasts or music, you can make it so that you only listen to something when reading that 10k. This ensures your brain forms a positive link. I personally do this with textbook reading and eating gummy bears
  • Stop cooking your dopamine receptors. No jerking off, no video games, no instant gratification. We live in a world where large companies have perfectly crafted algorithms and food specifically to trigger our dopamine receptors. That doesn't mean go instantly no dopamine cold turkey, but wean off it over the coming weeks.
  • I'll repeat the waking up at a certain time, and also say sleeping at a certain time. Circadian rhythm is a strong thing.
  • Explore the natural world around us. Go for hikes, get outside, explore nature. It really brings clarity to the mind
  • Talk to people. We're social creatures. Meet some new people outside work.

Best answer - huge emphasis on exercising, seeing a therapist if you have trauma/any type of anxiety or depression + magnesium-l threonate if your body tolerates it properly.

Morning sunlight as well or artificial light if necessary.

Also, and I’ve said this again to many people I know with sleeping issues/brain fog - get tested for sleep apnea/hypo or hyper thyroidism. Before I treated my sleep apnea I was so tired I literally started getting paranoid bc of lack of restorative sleep + insane brain fog.

most stuff about meditation and exercise is true but doesn’t really touch on reality because they’re one dimensional.

I get those sometimes and usually I just spend a whole week (sometimes months) doing absolutely nothing but consume everything I possibly could without breaking my bank. That’s lots of video games, ordering food, watching movies, going to bars, etc… I find it really important to indulge as much as I possibly could sometimes - literally anything that O haven’t done or find unique or anything that I have done but still want more of that I can afford, I do.

I slowly introduce time for exercise but the whole point of consuming is actually to learn how to be more meditative as a default setting. Most people think it’s some sort of toggle on/off thing but you can actually learn to live meditatively 24/7. And the quickest path? Surprisingly but obviously is to just enjoy life.

You really can’t produce anything meaningful if you don’t know how to consume.

Now go spend some money and feel something.

When in doubt, use more peanut butter
