Favorite Card/Board Games
Hey you finance nerds, was wondering what your favorite card/board games are? I'm mostly interested in strategy games like Ticket to Ride and Settlers of Catan, but really just like any game that has some level of thought to it.
What are some games you've played that you would recommend?
Big fan of Stratego, along with Catan
Came here to say Stratego as well. I absolutely love this game. It’s hard to regularly play unfortunately because most good games take ~2 hours
Azul - can be played like a child game or a cutthroat competition
Root - probably the coolest game I’ve played though also complicated, everyone plays essentially a seperate race/character that’s completely different
Ascension - a deck building game with a fantasy twist
Secret hitler - better warewolf
Arkham Horror series
Settlers of Catan is a top choice and the different expansion packs and then Risk which is a great great game but be warned it’ll take at least a couple hours
Munchkin is a favorite for me. They have a bunch of different variations, so it can be kind of confusing for a new player.
Telestrations: For non-board gamers - the one to bring out for your girlfriend's friends. It's like a game of telephone, but with drawing.
Betrayal of House on the Hill
Power Grid is a good one. German board games are great.
Durak (Дурак). Russian card came, super fun. Very skill-based, helps with memory and a bit of strategy
poker is still the best for me
yeah NLHE poker is the best
Am I the only dork here who still plays Yu-Gi-Oh? Since they released Master Duel it's just too fun & easy. Other most frequently played/favorite board games are Chess, Catan, and Talisman.
I haven't played current format Yugioh in a long time, but do play Goat and March 2012 occasionally with a friend.
How easy is it to play Yu-Gi-Oh? I used to play as a kid and I feel like it has changed so much since when I played. Seems ultra-complicated but looks really fun still. I just would think it is super hard to pick back up today from where I left off.
Cards Against Humanity, duh. But Catan is good too. Or if you really want to test friendships, Risk. Poker is fun when you smack someone with a two-seven offsuit and get to the point where your buddies have to buy in through you since you built an entire lego style castle out of all the chips you've collected.
Oh, and on the finance scale, Monopoly is a never ending classic. And [PrivateTechquity 🚀GME+BBBY🚀], I raise you MTG or the old school Star Wars card game.
Never really got into MTG, when Yu-Gi-Oh came out it was a lot more approachable. Just simpler and cheaper, plus the explosive success of the Manga and TV show made it very easy for a little kid to dive in. I've watched some videos explaining it and it seems fun, but the differences are minimal enough, pricing still notably different, and the size of the player base just makes Yu-Gi-Oh the better choice to me still. If I had a friend with cards and beers and they wanted to teach me to play I'd be open to learning.
My favorite is definitely Catan. I've played in a couple Catan leagues and loved it. Hoping to get something up to speed again this summer related to a Catan league.
Just reminds me of this:
lol
"Risk is a game of luck disguised as a game of strategy, which means you can’t help but feel like an idiot every time you lose to your dumb friends, even though all they managed to do was roll higher numbers than you.
The only real tactical element comes from the negotiating, which always ends in tragedy. Alliances disappear faster than heterosexuality at a Lady Gaga concert; the second someone can exchange a set of Risk cards for some armies they’re going to turn around and crush you like the bug you are.
If you manage to survive the assault you’ll trade in some cards of your own and return the favor, and the two of you will go back and forth in a bitterly personal conflict until the guy who spent the entire game holed up in Australia sweeps the board in a single turn. You and your friend will blame each other for the fact that you both lost, and your fractured relationship will teach you lessons that apply to both Risk and life: never let a conflict get personal, and never trust anyone from Australia."
