Former colleague/Friend from another department was fired, should I contact her ? I never worked on a project/deal with her, but we got along pretty well in cocktails and after work event, I learned this week that she got kicked out..I'm not sure if I should contact her and if so what to tell her...I know most guys will ask, yes she's good looking, but not my type, the idea was really to keep contact..anyway I'd like to get advices from you guys, maybe more experienced monkeys have dealt with the same situation.. Thanks, D

This stuff always depends on the individual..so, hard to tell without knowing her personally what the best thing to do would be. Personally, if I wasn't close enough to have their cell or have hung out with them outside of work before, I'd simply wait till they found a new job and updated their LinkedIn and reach out that way - perhaps to congratulate them on the new position and plan for drinks to catch up

No downside for you reaching out to her. As long as you don't turn it into a "tell me the story" session (ie it's at her option to tell you about it), there's no downside for her either.

I've caught up post-firing with retrenched people I've liked and they have generally appreciated it.

Send her something like:

"Hi,

I heard you left last week. If you're around town and would like to catch up for lunch, let me know.

SeekingAlphaDC"

ie: - Leave it at her option whether she wants to catch up with you, given she's likely feeling a bit of turmoil at the moment - Lunch is a close ended encounter and sounds less like an attempt to score - Don't try offering sympathy unless she's actively asking for - many people don't want or need it from former colleagues at this point in their career

Those who can, do. Those who can't, post threads about how to do it on WSO.
