FP&A Analyst vs Business Analyst vs Data Analyst (lifestyle, comp, breaking in, progression)

Would love to know differences. Am currrently learning SQL and I know that it's a needed for BAs and DAs but not exactly for FAs.

To your knowledge, which position gives best comp, work hours, difficulty to break into, and exit ops? All knowledge is appreciated. Considering leaving FP&A and moving into BA or DA role once I learn SQL enough because while I like my job now, it really is just creating reports from our databases. Not too much creativity, projects, or critical thinking.

Would love for anyone with any knowledge to provide feedback! Best to you all.

Background 1 year out of non-target southern school Finance & Banking degree 3.0 GPA Currently 5 months working in Central Finance FP&A in retail industry (working on getting better and better at my current role before I make real moves to look at other options -- but will network in meantime).

Any advice or knowledge?

edit: Some goals would be to break into Corp strat (seemingly more likely) or corp dev (seemingly less likely) rathre than stay for a director path in the 3 aforementioned roles. I'd like the more strategic and interesting job functions from corp dev/strat so that's why i'd want to make my move and i'm willing to go to BSchool for it

Don't beat yourself up on this, Eric. Some people like taking the long way home. Who the fuck knows?

  1. At my company, BA/ DA is a separate function from FP&A, although the two groups are always in contact. Essentially the BA/DA are programming and writing queries and FP&A then uses those queries/ reports. In terms of hours, FP&A is usually the only group that stays late (busy times of year, budget, etc).

  2. In terms of breaking into Corp Strat/Dev, FP&A is going to give you a much better shot. If I were you (ignoring MBA), I'd do these 3 things to help your odds.

  • Network and develop rapport with leadership
  • Be the best FP&A analyst you can be
  • Continue to learn SQL

Long story short, if you're crushing your job and building relationships, I don't see why you can't get a gig in Corp Dev/ Strat. If you convey your wants/ desires in an effective manner and are an all-star in your current role, most leaders will oblige in an effort to keep talent (I see this all the time). Hopefully this helps, happy to answer any questions!

Thank you!!! This is great news. Appreciated.

What other divisions have a good shot for corp dev/strat? Is FP&A one of my best bets if i'm not in an FLP (my company does not offer this program any longer).

I plan on networking with my corp dev/strat team in the future and ask for some projects once i've fully learned all my functions.
