From Mutual Fund Sales to IB?

Hey guys. I wanted to consult your wisdom/experiences with career change to ask if anyone has experience or perspective on going from mutual fund sales rep to investment banking? I ask because I have developed a strong interest in pursuing IB, but have had all financial industry experience from working as a mutual funds sales rep and as a broker at one shop in the Midwest. Recently a position became available with a major investment banking hiring for a Public Finance Analyst. I have 5 securities licenses and five plus years in finance. While mutual funds are the main business of the firm I work for, I also get to handle trades in munis, treasuries, precious metals, stocks, and other securities.

Have any of you had the experience of moving from one uncorrelated area of finance to another as well as from sales to analysis?

Thanks for replying to this thread. The role involves backing up senior IB associates by providing transactional support and researching municipal financing. This would involve analyzing debt models and creating proposals and marketing pieces. You would also be next in line to discuss municipal offerings with clients and outside consultants.

My experience comes primarily as a trader of muni bonds within brokerage and having experience with the EMMA system as well as doing sales consulting to help drive proprietary products with retail clients. This role will require picking up the Series 50 and 52 in addition to the 63(which I already have).

But I'm 30, have not gone to a target business school, did not major in finance, and have more of a general grasp of investment analysis without too much in depth calculation.

I am not in I-banking but I would say muni i-banking is not nearly as competitive as equity i-banking and therefore, you may have a chance. I am basing my comments on what I know about the buy side muni space. Everything helps, and I could be wrong, but I am not sure if you need a target school background to get into muni i-banking. I would say go for it.

Hopefully some of the i-bankers here who work in this space or a related space will comment with some insight.
