Go for one drink and leave, that's what most people do anyway.

It was the type of party we had to RSVP to a while back. We're eating at a fine restaurant downtown, and my co-workers said last year everyone stayed for 3+ hours. There will be almost 30 people there (and yes, they'd realize if I wasn't there!)

I'm only 22 and literally almost everyone there will be in their 40's and 50's. Awkward as HELL!!

I'm in the same situation man. I'm hoping people actually drink so at least I can get a little drunk without being too conspicuous. You could say that your parents are in town and you'll have to cut out early to meet up with them? Just say you can't stay for dinner, just a drink. That way it sounds like you tried at least.

Go, eat some good food, have a few drinks, tell a few jokes and then pull and irish goodbye.

Are you guys social handicapped or something? Just because they are 40 doesn't mean they don't watch football, shoot the shit, and enjoy getting tipsy. The coolest guy i work with is 52, we talk about golf all day.

Go, and buy rounds of shots for everyone before the food comes. They will love you even if you leave after 30 min.

To echo some of the previous posts, you should really reconsider going. Not only will you probably get a pretty good meal and possibly some booze on the company's tab, but you will have a chance at talking to your colleagues in a non-work setting which is a huge opportunity for relationship-building. Also, middle-aged people are still potentially cool people, this will only be awkward if you make it awkward. As an example, last year when I was 20, I had a few drinks with a middle-aged senior guy at the company xmas party. He is now actively helping me in my career transition which is a huge advantage.
