Give up the Crackberry???
Now here's a controversy that cuts right to the heart of our lives as bankers. Could you imagine life without a Blackberry? According to a recent study by Gartner (through Appleinsider), the Blackberry OS is a dinosaur and will fall to fifth place in usage, even behind Windows Mobile, in the next two years.
So who is the new darling of the mobile world? Not the iPhone. According to the study, it's the new OS by Google, known as Android. They predict it will become the #2 operating system on mobile phones in the next two years. The #1 operating system will remain the Symbian system, currently with 39% of the marketplace.
So, are you ready to trade in the Blackberry for a touch-screen marvel with all the bells and whistles? I won't do it here in France, because the only Android phones we have available here come with the annoying AZERTY keyboard (annoying if you're not French, that is).
Is anyone using an Android phone now? How is it compared to the Blackberry and the iPhone? Could you actually exist as an investment banker without a Blackberry?
I doubt too many of the BBs will be giving up the Blackberry. Though it is a dinosaur by consumer standards, it seems to serve its purpose in the business world. Not to mention Blackberry is likely to continue to update their operating system as time goes on but their focus has never really been the average consumer...much like Nextel wasn't either. Although other phones and their operating systems, especially that of Android, continue to grow and outpace the Blackberry one of the key aspects of the continued use of RIM's devices is that it is very closed and secure. One of the perks of Android is its open architecture, which makes it a nightmare for IT managers. Obvious this could change, much like the corporate use of the iPhone did when it initially came out.
As for your other questions, I can't really speak to them but as far as I know, you could certainly "exist" using the other devices, but it would have to be supported through the companies servers.
