I understand that the motivation for this post may mostly be a joke, and if that's how you want this to be interpreted, then that's mostly fine, but in the spirit of being helpful, let's think about this.
Let's grant for a moment that obesity or having a BMI over a certain amount is unhealthy and actuarially related to a shorter lifespan. Let's say that being obese is because people lack self-control over what they eat (which ignores other metabolic causes of obesity which can sometimes be the case). Even with this unhealthy lifestyle and apparent lack of self-control, does that invalidate everything that a person has to say? What about other behaviors which have a tendency to reduce lifespan? Heavy drinking is very common on Wall Street, and plenty of bosses are functioning alcoholics. Are they worth listening to? Do they have valuable experience? What about smoking? What about depression? What about loneliness? What about skinny-fat people who don't get as much exercise as they should? What about people with unhealthy diets but a healthy weight? What about pessimistic people? What about just being a man? Men don't live as long as women. Should we only listen to women?
Someone can make choices that are conducive to a shorter lifespan or otherwise demonstrate a lack of self-control in their lives, but that doesn't mean that their contributions are worthless or that they don't know what they're talking about at work. When you're challenged by thoughts like this, think through the factors I just outlined and take inventory of the fact that there are plenty of other things which lead to a shorter life in the same way that obesity does, and yet you never thought to discount those people's opinions in the same way that you did this person's. Food for thought, so long as your colleague doesn't eat it first...
