Harder to make MD or Army General?

Do you think it's harder to become a General in the US Army or to become an MD at a top-tier bank? I am thinking it's harder to become a General given the headcount quotas in place , but honestly don't have the faintest clue. Would love to hear from those that have served and can provide perspective from both sides.

I come from a large military family. It depends on your career path (billet). If you're a pilot, there are more slots for general or admiral than if you're a Navy SEAL. There are not that many SEAL O-7 slots, so you really have to perform if you're a SEAL. My cousin is a fighter pilot and made 3 Star Admiral. He is still active duty. I also knew a SEAL who went into IB and probably would have made MD if he didn't die of melanoma. He survived being a SEAL and died of skin cancer. Tragic.

Overall though, I think making O-7 or above in the military is more prestigious than making MD. But, my brother was offered a O-7 SEAL slot and turned it down to take a director role in the corporate world mainly because the pay was better and his wife didn't want to relocate to Tampa to serve in the SOCOM command.

Agreed. I’m an Army brat myself. It’s just a completely different career. In banking you’re grinding it out in NYC doing deal after deal and cultivating your network + industry expertise. In the Army you’re moving from base to base, doing different jobs, getting deployed, coming back, moving again, deployed again, repeat until you can reasonably stay in DC for a good while at the Pentagon. It’s very hard on you and your family. Yes bankers work long hours but the comp makes it much more manageable for families. They can do the whole private school / boarding school NYC suburban lifestyle. With the military you’re just optimizing for the least ghetto school off base.
