Anyone else used to play video games when they were younger?

I have over a few months picked up playing video games, mainly on the weekend but also when WFH on Fridays when no one actually check-in. Anyone here play League, CSGO or Valorant?

I used to be a typical highelo rank addict in league and quit a year ago. The thing with the games you mentioned is that, I don't see how can you obtain joy out of it other than playing competitive. But if you were to play for comp, your job usually doesn't allow you to have any meaningful improvement.

I got back into WoW again this fall and played heavy for a few months when dragonflight came out. It’s always a fun distraction for the weekend or slow Fridays working from home. So nostalgic to fly around classic zones or Pandaria which is the expansion I first played it during. Nice game. Currently playing through baldurs gate 3 on the last day of my vacation.

Started playing in MOP as well. Those good old arena days are no more. I played a little bit of Shadowlands last year and that shit devours my time like a black hole with a lot of nonsense dailies and reputations. Found it really hard to fall in love with it again...

If you’re looking to potentially get back into it, the latest expansion has responded well to the player base and effectively killed all of the grinds that were such huge pain points in SL. Leveling is incredibly easy, max level gearing in PvP and pve is also very easy, and it’s a very alt friendly expansion. Been having loads of fun, no grind required.

Been playing WoW since BC - I was able to raid mythic during shadowlands, but work has made that type of commitment an impossibility.

I can honestly say that some of the best times I’ve ever had were in Azeroth with my friends…

Played LoL in college- grades suffered because of it. I quit and my grades improved. Picked it back up again while WFH during the pandemic- work product started to suffer because of it. Was too easy to just say "one more game" and to do nothing at all that day. Literally answered a phone call from my director (3 levels above me at the time) and tried to multitask talking to her because I didn't want to lose the ranked game I was in. So yet again, I quit and uninstalled. A few months back I got a new phone and downloaded wild rift.. Realized I couldn't just recreationally dip my toes in- so I again uninstalled.

It's a drug, man.

In college now but I practically had no social life in high school and had met most of my friends online. Level 10 faceit with 5000 hours on CSGO and Had three accounts in the top 500 simultaneously on Valorant. Needless to say I pulled zero bitches.

Never made it close to pro in CS however valorant top 500 que is pretty much all professionals or rising pros. Most NA orgs when I played were paying $20-30k a month (crazy ik) and those guys would also make more from streaming. Thing is getting try outs is fully built on connections similar to banking which makes it extremely hard to break in especially considering how cult like it is where you need to absolutely dick ride people if you want anything. I was trying out for FaZe academy at one point with a friend and I ended up not getting in however he did and would scrimmage/practice 8-12 hours a day. Making $10k a month at age 18. He quit 5 months in and went to college and sure its crazy money but most people are in and out of the pro scene within a few years and just get filtered out by the next generation.

I could have gone pro in league when I was in highschool. peaked 1100lp and constantly matched with pros/streamers. As much as I enjoyed the game, I personally think going pro in any esport is a bad decision. Because the career is very much like a hedge fund career but only more concentrated, volatile. Luck plays a huge part. Plus that when u get a bit older and you lose your reaction time - your only exits  to become a streamer, a coach or work on the capital you saved over the years. (While no transferable skills were obtained, let's face it.)

The career is inherently unsustainable. Your pay depends on the game and the hot thing is always changing. And even for the same game you have diff versions over time. An example would be the Europeans' dominance in league 11 years ago v.s. where there are now. While a career in the market is just the opposite, you are mostly likely getting wiser as you age.

I played a shit ton of WoW Shadowlands arenas during Covid. Had a lot of fun but was definitely addicted. Sticking to boring single players from now on.

What's a good multiplayer game for casuals?  I feel like e sports have made multiplayer video games so competitive and grindy.  I want something I can enjoy that doesn't have a learning curve, like playing the weird game modes of CoD back in the day (anyone remember infected?)

Chivalry 2 is awesome with buddies. Lil tricky but fun regardless.

Also modern warfare is always fun
