How do you stay positive at work?
How do you stay positive at work when you're tired, disengaged and unmotivated?
In my early performance reviews, everyone commented that I had a great attitude, but I feel the resentment building, despite reminding myself that I'm getting paid a lot and I'm lucky to have a job that opens doors.
Does anyone have any suggestions of how to stay positive and enthusiastic at work? I've firmly decided not to pursue a career in PE or investment banking, but I want to be more engaged at work for my own benefit as well as that of my colleagues. It's harder than I thought it would be though.
Take a moment to really focus on the good things as they come. Personally, I think you can only get so much happiness out of work itself and need to focus on other areas to be happy. Here's a good article from the Atlantic about building a happier brain/life:

Happiness is all relative. Someone on WSO (really wish I remembered who) once said that happiness=reality-expectations. In other words, your happiness is directly influenced by how much reality exceeds your expectations. If it's the hours keeping you down, just keep in mind that there are millions of people who work just as many, if not more, hours and get paid less than $50,000 per year. That does not mean that you are not entitled to complain, but it should put things in perspective. Good luck.

There you go. Just for the record, he didn't come up with that, though.
Hahaha. Not gonna lie...I've been trying to find that thread for months. +SB
I like this Alan Watts clip, a lot ... take a listen
"Better to have a short life that is full of what you like doing than a long life spent in a miserable way"
Damn, this is an amazing video.
I actually first heard this sampled on the Incredible True Story album by Logic, and i could not figure out for the life of me who had originally said it (sadly too lazy to internet). Thanks SB+1
The song name is also the Incredible True Story, btw. That whole album is pretty great.
read shawn achor's the happiness advantage. you'll go through points in life where you're down, the lessons here have helped me out.
Whenever I'm feeling deflated at work, I look down at the Gucci loafers hugging my feet and remind myself that I could be elsewhere right now sporting some cheap-as-shit square-toes. That always cheers me up
different but good approach to remain positive
Usually just go yank one

Since there are a lot of bloggers here that are currently in a depressed state. Just wanted to start a discussion of good stories that are happening now and thats happened in the past. Example......a kid that went to a community college and went straight into IBD. Please do share
My through-childhood dog died when I graduated college.
My girlfriend's sister gave me a rusty trombone last night.
For the Life Doesn't Suck Everywhere stories, we have http://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/funny-how-things-work-out
haha. Dipset, if I told you I knew someone who did that, I really doubt it would cheer you up
LOL your right........but seriously anyone...anyone..Beuller?? anyone??? there has to be a story of a CC kid making it to an interview or a SA position. Or whats the most extreme outlier that you guys have come across?

One I liked: "Today, I was babysitting this one year old. She just learned how to say yes so if you asked her ANYTHING, she'd say yes. I asked her if she liked vegetables and she said "yes!" Then I asked her if I was pretty... she looked at me and said "NO.""
Is a, success in banking, story the only thing that will cheer you up? Geez, there must be some stupid Lifetime movie you can go watch on TV, like "I Left my Heart in Georgia" staring Alan Thicke and Betty White (totally just made that up, don't waste your time looking it up). Recipe for a Lifetime movie = sappy title + washed up actors.
I digress, if it's really a feel good story you want though, go walk an energy floor. People from schools I've never even heard of all over the place from BO ops to FO trading.
Read "The Happiness Equation" and do a google search for the term "Ikigai."
Need help staying positive (Originally Posted: 03/20/2017)
I was laid off in January, it sucked, but I saw it as a blessing in disguise as I wasn't happy at my firm. It was a consulting firm focused on financial services. I hit the ground applying, cold-emailing and land interviews across, consulting and internal strategy roles, however, none of them turn into offers. I'm able to pass the HR screen, even pass the manager phone screen, but when it comes to final round no offer. It's getting frustrating and I'm starting to feel depressed and to top it off I'm not getting much traction as I was in Jan and Feb. I was having interviews every week, but now not so much.
I really thought I had an offer at this one firm. I interviewed with the manager, got called back to meet the director then got called back to meet VP. The interview with the VP was just a candid chit-chat and said he would give positive feedback and that was three weeks. I followed up HR she said she was traveling and didn't have any news and would have an update last week. but didn't hear anything. I might follow up tomorrow, but I imagine a ding.
I just don't know how to stay positive right now.
