If you're on the client side of IB advisory - do your bankers suggest ridiculous times for project calls?
So I now work in FP&A/corporate finance, and am on the client side of receiving M&A advisory services.
I'm well aware of the hours bankers work, but it seems like they sometimes forget that most people outside of banking go home at 5PM. We had our advisors (albeit this was from a junior analyst, so perhaps a bit green still) very seriously email us asking if we can do an 8PM project call and then schedule daily 6PM catch up calls.
How is everyone else's experience?
You aren't going to get much sympathy from this crowd on 6pm/8pm calls but I understand your point very well. When I left banking, there was a big adjustment period where I had to learn that not everyone is going to drop everything at any hour to get work done. I remember gasping when I asked someone for something simple on a Thursday and they replied "yes no problem, will send early next week". BTW, that was a completely acceptable response, I just had to reorientate to what is reasonable for normal course work.
That said, you should think of transactions as "one-time" or "non-recurring" events that could require a change to the norm. You aren't going to let a deal die because the sign flips to closed at 5pm. More importantly, for you, you need to make sure that others in your org (bosses et al) understand that your hours have gotten longer and your job has gotten more complicated as a result of a merger. In every deal I've ever been a part of there has been a person, or group of people, that bore the brunt of the work. It wasn't what they signed up for, they had no say in what was going on, but they ended up being critical to getting the deal done. These are the unsung heroes of the process.
Fortunately in every case I know that these folks were taken care of. They received nice transaction bonuses and in many cases elevated there careers by being involved in a high profile and impactful project. If that is of interest to you, you should view this as a great opportunity. If that's not of interest, then just stick to what you're doing because ultimately it's not your problem.
Well said, Mr. C. Entertainment Cheese
I've been on the other side of this - working with Department of Defense clients. If you send out a request after noon on Friday, you're lucky to get a response back by Tuesday.
