Is Naples a Safe Place to Travel as a Tourist
Hey everyone, so thinking of taking a trip to Naples. Have heard tons of negative stories with a few good ones. Is there anyone who has visited and could share their story? Right now thinking of skipping it and taking the ferry to the Amalfi Coast instead.
Background on me: Can speak conversational Italian but a native speaker can easily tell I am a tourist because of accent and all. Have visited Italy before but was in the North.

I've been to naples and amalfi before, naples was a bit dirtier and sketchier than rome, but at no point did I feel unsafe. it sounds like heresy, but I was really underwhelmed by amalfi. if you want to go, great, but there's nothing to do there but take pretty boat rides, buy expensive gifts and eat at a handful of overpriced restaurants. it's pretty no doubt, but I won't be going back

OP, what you need to know: -the food is great; -people are incredibly welcoming and warm; -the tourist area is generally kept well enough, because it's a major source of revenue; outside it, you might have issues; the rubbish problem isn't as bad as a few years ago, but it's still there. The city is indeed dirty; -do not buy ''cheap'' stuff, ever; if someone is trying to sell you the latest Iphone or whatever Italian fashion item at a price that sounds too good to be true, avoid it like a plague; unfortunately, this is where most tourists fall for.
Do I recommend visiting? Absolutely, the city can be lovely. You'll get a spring climate too at this point. I wouldn't recommend living there though. Under many aspects, it's essentially a third world place. It's not as violent as years ago fortunately.
Edit: Just an example, you can type ''corse clandestine napoli'' (illegal horse races in Naples) on youtube and get an example of how weird it can be.
I have never been to my great shame. Being a pizza lover (worshipper?), I plan on making it a full-on pilgrimage when I do actually go. I lived in Milan for a bit and people there warned against going to Naples because of how "crazy it was." Which makes me want to visit even more.
Btw, I saw a study on mafia's percentage of GDP in major and medium-size Italian cities and while Naples was for a long time in the lead, Rome has caught up significantly with both cities being around the 5% mark of GDP going to the mafia.
was there last summer.....its dirty and old and in desparate need of renovation...more so that the avg old european city...but no more dangerous than any other old european city like paris, rome, etc...
on the plus side...naples is very busy (well....certain areas) and busy in a fun way (similar to rome and paris...but more low income). However, your enjoyment will be determined by what you are looking for. if you want quant old world charm with peace and serenity....then naples is not gonna be it. if you prefer clean and modern...again, not naples.
if you like the idea of cramming 1 million people with low incomes into a relatively small area, and letting them live in dirty conditions, where govt money is funneled to the mafia instead of being used to modernize a very old city....that's Naples. The people will spend their time and money living..cooking...relaxing...and that can be fun (lots of bars, cafes, restaurants not very expensive)...but you will notice the crumbling infrastructure and dirt almost everywhere.
the towns on the amalfi coat are all small...if you want to explore and see a large area...they are so very tiny and jam packed. Naples is big...like Paris and Rome are big...but not as modern. Many people take the 45 min boat trip to Capri...but again, not much there (tho, if you want quiet...Capri is nice...but expensive). Both Amalfi and Positano are jam packed into tourist nightmares (at least..my nightmare..tho i did really enjoy the tour and cooking class of the family run vertical lemon orchard of Amalfi).
Personally, i prefer Paris when i want a european city. Good combo of old and new. You can see the effect of govt money spent on infrastructure...yet the people still want to enjoy life and food. Cinque Tere ws great when i was last there...but that was many years ago...i hear its become more touristy with cruise ships stopping there (its not really big enough to absorb massive cruise ships)
Yep, couldn't have said it better. Naples is old, dirty and literally has shit everywhere. It's not dangerous but it's not worth visiting.
Capri is definitely nicer, cleaner and worth going to.
Pass on Naples. I feel Pescara gets no love from the tourists. Nice place on the Adriatic, 2hr from Rome only. Can take the ferry (either from Pescara directly or Ancona) to Croatia should you wish as well.
Pescara is a great town but if you've never been to Italy or haven't been there often there are quite a few places to visit first...no offence
Fair comment. I have bias given that's where my in-laws are from so pretty much part of the itinerary for me. It doesn't have the "touristy" attractions but I just think it's underrated given it's proximity to Rome.
It is a bit of a grimier, gritty city, but seconding others, I never felt unsafe there. The food is really good (cheap, tasty pizza in particular), there is some interesting shopping (e.g., clothes and leather goods) and an awesome archaeology museum. Up to you if this worthwhile or not. If not, I believe the train goes through Naples to Sorrento. Or you could take the ferry from Naples to Capri.
South Italy is totally different from what you would expect in Milan, daresay 3rd world even in some cases, but Naples is alright overall.
As an aside having lived in Europe before, I wholeheartedly think Italy is one of the more overrated countries one could go to. It's outclassed by Spain in almost all aspects, but the culture is nice, so it has that going for it.
I was in Naples a few months ago. Had a good time, had no issues with crime or anything else negative.
I spent 4 nights in Naples, visited Capri, Sorrento, Positano, took a pizza making class (everyone in it was from NY haha). Nightlife is good. Place is gritty and one of the castles in Naples is a total tourist trap, but otherwise, great time.
Definitely visit Positano, place is unbelievable.
Not dangerous. You get pick pockets coming around but that's because as a tourist you'll stick out. Hell, even Italians from outside Campania stick out
All of them are crooks. At least from my experience. The only nice person I met in Naples called me out for wearing a Juventus jersey this far south.
I only visited Naples briefly to see Pompeii.
I would recommend staying in Rome or Tuscany.
