Get a newer thinkpad model. Screen are finally decent and the keyboard is still pretty good. They also finally changed their weird fn & cntrl key configuration(yes I know you could change it in the BIOS).

Depends on your budget but I'm a huge huge fan of Thinkpads. X1 Carbon is one of the most popular and frequently talked about laptops on this site but if you're looking for a slightly cheaper (but not cheap) alternative, I personally use the T14

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some solid laptop suggestions for your new role at a small PE firm:

  1. Lenovo ThinkPad:

    • Known for its reliability and excellent keyboard.
    • A user mentioned getting a top model with a student discount for $650, which handled 10+ tabs, Excel, and PowerPoint without losing speed.
  2. Dell Laptops:

    • Look for models with at least a 9th Gen Intel i5/i7 processor, 8+ GB DDR4 RAM, and SSD storage (hybrid if possible).
    • Prioritize good battery life, a quality screen, and a comfortable keypad.
  3. General Recommendations:

    • Ensure the laptop can handle heavy Excel spreadsheets and other programs simultaneously.
    • Since InfoSec and compliance teams often require remote desktop programs for work, your laptop doesn't need to be overly powerful but should be reliable and efficient.

These options balance performance and cost, making them ideal for your role.

Congrats on the new role. For a solid Windows laptop that’s not crazy expensive, check out the Dell XPS 13 or Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon, both are reliable, fast, and great for work. They’re lightweight too, which is nice if you're on the go.
