Looking to move from NYC

Hi guys - Looking to move out from NYC for a better quality of life and save on those local income taxes. I currently work in midtown (park ave). Anyone have any suggestions on what areas I should look into? The luxury apartments in New Rochelle look intriguing. I currently pay $2000 in Queens (if that matters) in rent.

You’re looking to move anywhere in the US or only near NYC?

Before you move price out a monthly train ticket, it'll eat into your savings a lot.  Also, do you have a car? if not, then you'll probably need to buy one (plus insurance) if you live in the 'burbs.  Those items add up pretty quickly. Even though the headline of not paying city tax (~3.5%) sounds nice, the math frequently doesn't work out, and that's even before we start doing the soft-costs on changes to quality of life, and the value of the extra time you'll spend commuting.

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.

Metro north from New Rochelle or Fleetwood is $233. I dont have a car, and downtown New Rochelle is walkable. I also like whiteplains as well. Commute would be approximately the same as Queens ~30 - 35mins.

If you want a more suburb life (longer commute, less nightlife, quieter, etc.) then consider white plains or stamford, CT.

Hoboken/JC might be an option if you still want nightlife and an urban location, but you won't get much for $2,000.

Luxury apartments on other places in NJ on the Hudson river like Edgewater, Port Imperial, and Weehawken might be an option (commute via bus to port authority). But I doubt you'll be able to find something for the $2,000 you're paying now.
