Lying on uni personal statement
Studying in uk and applying to G5 unis next September. Already started writing my personal statement and was wondering if I can lie on it and to what extent.
I completed my middle school education in USA, I participated in one mathematics Olympiad, placed 5th. I’m thinking if I say that I placed first, will there be any chance of getting caught, do top unis check if the info on your PS is legit? Assuming that this Olympiad was relatively niche, only few states participated, not the whole country.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, lying on any application, including a university personal statement, is a risky move that can have serious consequences. While it might seem tempting to exaggerate achievements, especially if you think they are hard to verify, top universities like the G5 in the UK often have rigorous admissions processes. They may not check every detail immediately, but if discrepancies are discovered later (e.g., during interviews or after admission), it could lead to rejection or even expulsion.
Additionally, admissions officers are experienced in spotting inconsistencies or exaggerated claims. Even if the Olympiad was niche, claiming a higher placement could raise questions if it doesn't align with the rest of your profile or if they decide to verify it.
Instead of lying, focus on presenting your genuine achievements and experiences in the best possible light. Highlighting your actual 5th place finish in the Olympiad, combined with other strengths, will reflect integrity and authenticity—qualities that top universities value highly.

I'm not aware of the context, but a 5th place in an Olympiad is still very strong. Definitely don't lie if it's quite easy to check who won it. Even if they may brush over it, don't leave the risk in case they do check.
you lack integrity and you can't seem to understand risk-reward either.
This isn't pretending you read Hegel on your PS. Outright lying for something that doesn't even move the needle....
Not worth it. 5th is still quite good

I came first at that Olympiad, will apply as well and mention it - that way you get caught.
Most olympiads announce the rankings or the scores will be known by universities (as they might have contributed to questions) so it'll be easy to find out. 5th is fine, don't push your luck
